LEGO Art on Display at Discovery Center Museum

Nathan Sawaya is a lawyer who always played with LEGO. As a child, it was just fun. As a lawyer, it was a way to relax and de-stress at the end of the day. A number of years ago, Nathan ditched his day job (as a lawyer) and became a full time artist. His medium — LEGO.

These are impressive pieces of art too, many larger than life. Although most of Nathan’s pieces are three dimensional, he also does mosaic-style portraits. Here are some examples of his work:

  • Portraits of Alfred Hitchcock and Lindsay Lohan
  • A 7-foot long replica of the Brooklyn Bridge
  • A life-size Tyrannosaurus Rex
  • A globe
  • A giant sunflower
  • Tribute to John Lennon

“The Art of the Brick” is Nathan’s first solo art exhibit, and features over 30 pieces of LEGO art. It can be seen at the Discovery Center in Rockford, Illinois. The exhibit runs until Labor Day.

The Discovery Center Museum is located inside Riverfront Museum Park, at 711 North Main Street in Rockford, Illinois. Summer hours are Monday – Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm, Thursday until 7 pm, and Sunday, noon – 5 pm. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for children, and free for children under two years of age.

If you can’t make it to see the exhibit, you can find some LEGO pieces on display at various museums and public venues around the country, including one here in Seattle at Qwest Field.

Or, take a look at this video, and see some of the LEGO works of art, and learn what inspires Nathan and how he creates.

Wow, that is way too cool. My brothers and I played with LEGOs all the time as kids. I wonder how heavy those big creations get?

  2. A handful of LEGOs doesn’t seem to weigh very much. I’m guessing, however, that when you add them all together in a piece of art that’s larger than life that they get pretty heavy.

I think I’ll start looking out for pink LEGO
