Matchbook Monday: 13 Coins

If you’re flying into or out of Sea-Tac Airport in Seattle, today’s Matchbook Monday is one you’ll want to remember.

13 Coins 13 Coins is across the highway from Sea-Tac Airport (18000 International Boulevard, Sea-Tac) and is a popular stop for a pre-flight meal and libation, as well as a close hangout if you’re stuck at Sea-Tac Airport for any length of time.

The name of the restaurant comes from a rather schmaltzy story (and questionable in origin) about a poor young man who wished to marry a wealthy young woman.  When asked what he had to offer for the young woman’s hand in marriage, the young man reached into his pockets and pulled out 13 coins.  He assured the young woman’s father, however, that while he only had 13 coins, he could pledge his undying love, care, and concern.  Of course, the couple got married and lived happily ever after, giving the meaning to 13 Coins.

Whether the story is true or not, it’s a lovely one, and you’ll find a representative 13 coins in each at the tables at the restaurant.

The restaurant has high backed semi-private booths, but best of all are the swiveling captain’s chairs at the bar giving patrons a front row seat to watch food prep in the exhibition kitchen.  The 24-hour menu offers up large portions anytime of the day or night.  Try the Joe’s Special – it’s a customer favorite!

There is also a 13 Coins location downtown at 125 Boren, Seattle, but the one at the airport has always been my favorite.
