]]> Tavern on the Green Today’s Matchbook Monday is from Tavern on the Green, located in Central Park on the Upper West side of Manhattan (Central Park at West 67th Street).  It is one of the most successful independently owned restaurants in the U.S. 

Tavern on the Green is a frequent haunt for the famous and infamous of Manhattan, including actors, entertainers and politicians.  It’s been the site for many opening night receptions for Broadway shows and movie premieres, and has been featured in tons of movies and television shows.  Perhaps you remember seeing the restaurant, in all its glass and twinkling lights glory, in Ghostbusters, Hitch, or Wall Street (among many others).

The restaurant is also known for its connection to the New York City Marathon.  On the eve of the Marathon the restaurant hosts a huge pasta party.  Runners attend at no charge, perhaps having that final chance to carb up.  The evening also feature lives entertainment and fireworks.  The day of the race runners get to visit the restaurant again as they cross the finish line.

Lots of special events have happened at Tavern on the Green, and lots of memories made.  It seems like everyone has a special story about the restaurant.  If you do too, please feel free to share it in the comments.

]]> Ellis Island & Statue of Liberty.JPGFor a long time, the only thing I knew about New York City was what I saw in the movies.  Now that I’ve visited many times, it was fun to take a look at MSN Travel’s list of the Top Ten New York movie locations.

Can you name movies that featured scenes from these recognizable NYC locations?  (I put some of the ones that I could think of in parenthesis.)

]]> Now that the weather is getting warmer with each passing day, I hate to pass up an opportunity to miss out on the sun and warmth that is summer.  And, it’s far more pleasant to catch up on email, write for this blog, and read the blogs of my friends and the travel industry, when I’m in a sunny environment.

central park.jpgAlways looking to kill two birds with one stone, I was intrigured with the announcement that in July, Central Park will have free wi-fi.  By summer’s end, additional parks in Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx will as well.  Sounds like this may be NYC’s attempt to catch up with the free city-wide wi-fi plans of Philadelphia and San Francisco.

While I don’t NEED wi-fi in any park, it is a nice option — to go outside and still be able to get work done.  Sometimes packing around my laptop is a pain (in various places), but a change of scenery can spark those creative juices, and it sure as hell beats the inside of a boring hotel room.
