I fancy myself a cut above average when it comes to packing a suitcase. I have my standard items that I always pack, and never unpack, and I generally pack the same kind of things in the same kind of way. I make lists, revise as necessary, and manage to take everything that I need with a little room to spare. My system keeps it all very easy.

I’ve never felt the need to follow a guide, take a packing class, or do much more than stay organized.

However, after watching this concierge organize this bag, I learned a thing or two that I’ll be putting into effect. According to him, it’s all about layering and overlapping your stuff.

Take a look.

Do you fold and overlap your clothes like this when you pack? Or do you roll (another popular packing style)? Or do you just get everything into the suitcase the best that you can and not worry about it?

With all the emphasis on packing light, whether it’s so you can avoid checking your luggage (if you’re traveling by air) or to just have a little more room (if you’re traveling by car). here’s a handy way to pack a beach towel in very little room — the Lightload Towel.
The “towels” are compressed so that they fit into a pocket, and at about 3 1/2 inches in diameter, you can toss several inside a tote, backpack or purse. They weigh about 6 ounces, so packing several won’t take much effort or space at all.

The “towels” are compressed so that they fit into a pocket, and at about 3 1/2 inches in diameter, you can toss several inside a tote, backpack or purse. They weigh about 6 ounces, so packing several won’t take much effort or space at all.

The container is waterproof, so your towel is always dry, and when opened it expands into a nice sized 3 foot X 5 foot. The material is both absorbent and biodegradable, so you can use and throwaway while still being eco-friendly. Of course, they are also washable (recommended that they be washed in a mesh bag), but will not stand up to dozens of machine washes.

The obvious use for the towels would be as a beach towel, but they could come in handy in a number of different ways while traveling — as a makeshift tablecloth, a clean up rag, something to sit on, or a layer of warmth if caught without one.

Towels can be purchased online, and run $6.50/piece when ordering up to 11, and drop to $3.50 a piece when ordering a dozen or more. A smaller sized towel ( 1 foot X 2 foot) is also available. The Lightload Towel can also be purchased at various retail locations.

With all the traveling that I do, I’m going to stock up on a few of these. I can think of many times that they would have come in handy, and now there’s no reason to be caught short.
