Flyaway Cafe’s Travel Favorites 8-16-09

Hello fellow travelers!
I’ve gathered up some great weekend reads, so grab a cup of coffee, and settle in.  These posts are sure to make for great Sunday (or any day) reading:
Filipina Soul introduces us to the Ayala Museum which houses world-class collections based on the history of the Philippines.  Beautiful!

Travel Writers News lists the best online travel resources.  I was aware of most of these, but picked up a few that I’ve now added to my list.  You’ll find this very helpful.
The Los Angeles Guide introduces to the mobile food vendors are the latest, hippest, dining experience to hit LA, …read more

380,000 Wine & Food Pairings at Your Fingertips

380,000 Wine & Food Pairings at Your Fingertips

Another iPhone app that I’ve discovered!  And you know how I love my apps.  This one is handy for use at home and while traveling, and appeals to the foodie and wine lover in me.
The new Drinks Matcher, from Nat Decants, is a combination wine sommelier and bartender, all in the convenience of your smart phone.  You can quickly choose a wine whether you’re sitting at a restaurant, lounging poolside, or shopping at the supermarket or liquor store.  Since the app doesn’t require an internet connection, you can even use it when you’re dining on the patio and some …read more

Wine Travel: Buy Your Own Barrel

Wine Travel: Buy Your Own Barrel

If travel, just for the sake of travel, seems too decadent for you, how about this excuse:  I have top pop down to Argentina to my vineyard and check on my wine.  OK, I might be overstating things just a bit, but with the Algodon Wine Estates Barrel Ownership program you can combine your love of travel with your love of wine.
Algodon Wine Estates, is located in Mendoza, Argentina, an area known as the Napa Valley of South America.  and is producing some top wines.  This is a chance to get a barrel of your own.  Purchase it alone, …read more

Location:  Napa Valley Vineyard.
One of my most enjoyable weekend trips is to spend time wine tasting in the Napa Valley (California).  While several large, major wineries are located in Napa, I’ve found that some of the most fun are the smaller, limited production, family wineries.

Sonoma County Harvest Fair

Sonoma County Harvest Fair

The weather cooling down at the end summer means that harvest time is just around the corner.
All those lovely fall fruits and vegetables.  But perhaps most importantly, it’s harvest time in the vineyards.  Aaaaaaaaah, for a little taste of the grape!
Last month is was Grapefest, and this month it’s the Sonoma County Harvest Fair, running October 6-8th at the Fairgrounds.
Like most harvest festivals you’ll see the traditional vendors, arts and crafts, food booths, and a variety of entertainment.  And like most grape harvest festivals, you’ll also have educational sessions, auctions, plenty of time to learn more about and purchase wine, and, …read more

Grapevine, Texas: 20th Annual Grapefest

Grapevine, Texas: 20th Annual Grapefest

My pal, Astroprof, sent me some information about the 20th anniversary of Grapefest, being held in Grapevine, Texas.  This wine festival, “A Sparkling Celebration” is billed as the largest in the southwest, and starts today and runs through the weekend.
There are a wide variety of events, one of which is sure to pique your interest:  the Cooking Pavilion with cooking demonstrations and food and wine pairings, street vendors, wine tastings, the Grape Stomp (a contest to see who can produce the most juice starting with 20 pounds of grapes), tennis classic, wine auction, Italian car show, Kidzone and a carnival …read more

Flight Attendant Shopping: Vino 100 in Bellevue, Washington

I stumbled upon Vino 100 on a shopping expedition with a fellow flight attendant.  It is conveniently located at Lincoln Square (across from the Bellevue Square shopping mall), a perfect place for a couple flight attendants to check out after a rigorous day of shopping.
I’m tired of places that make wine selection sound like its rocket science, and have always subscribed to the theory that the “best” wines are the ones that I like, regardless of vineyard, vintage or price.
That’s the same attitude that Vino 100 owner, Elizabeth Lee, brings to her store.  Although she carries some nice, high end …read more
