I’ve used many a Lonely Planet Guide when researching travel, so when they offered to send me the new edition of their Travel With Children, I was eager to give it a read. While a non-parent myself, I’ve had occasion to travel with some small fry, and after working for 20+ years as a Flight Attendant (and I’m not telling you how many years that + represents), I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly about kids on planes.

So I settled in for a good read.

Unfortunately, I didn’t make it past more than a handful before I began scratching my head. OK, I remember that Lonely Planet is published in Australia, so maybe things are a bit different down under. Still, they sell a lot of guides to a lot of people that aren’t in Australia, so there should be a broad perspective.

I kept reading. OK, they tackle issues about packing, health and medical issues, and school quite nicely. Pretty good stuff about preparing your little one and yourself for traveling.

But honestly, after that I pulled up short at the Transport Section, specifically by Air. And the light bulb over my head came on. AHA! I know now why so many people on my flights are so ill equipped to travel with children – they must have read this guide and taken all the bad information and advice to heart! Because this section reads like it was written by someone who hasn’t traveled since the 1970’s, or haven’t flown on a US airline in the past 10 years.

Here are a few of the gems you’ll find:

Almost all airlines have children’s activity packs on board medium-to-long-haul flights which will complement the toys and activities you’ve brought.

Plus, many airlines now have good audio and visual entertainment for children so they can plug into the children’s audio channel and also watch the kids’ movies or shows.

Special children’s meals and activity packs are usually available

Nappies and baby food are available for infants

On most long haul flights, airlines will carry emergency supplies of nappies and, upon request, can provide jars of baby food.

Car seat information that varied from having to buy a seat for it, not being able to use it for take off and landing, and paying a child’s fare for the seat.

All airlines carry a number of bassinets or sky cots on long-distance flights.

Some airlines insist that you wear an infant restraint belt to keep your infant in

Most airlines will heat up bottles and also provide baby food, upon request.

And unfortunately, that’s where my enthusiasm for the guidebook petered out. Although the remaining sections of the book dealt with specific types of vacation plans, and specific suggestions based on a variety of destinations, the errors in the initial part of the book made me hesitant about how much credibility to give it.

While some international carriers offer a few more amenities than US carriers, with the move to ala carte ticket pricing, the extras have gone away. That includes things like activity packs and special meals. On an international flight they might be available on some airlines, but to raise that expectation to the level of almost all or most is a true disservice to a parent.

The same goes for nappies. At one time we may have had ONE diaper, but it’s long since gone away. Other Flight Attendant friends say that maybe there will be one, but certainly a parent should count on it.

Baby food and bottle warmers. I have never had baby food stocked on a flight for the 20+ years that I’ve been flying. No one else seems to remember it either. One friend said that she thought Emirates and/or Singapore might carry it, but no one that I talked to has actually seen it. Ditto for the bottle warmer. I’ve never seen one. And we don’t have microwaves either. If someone needs to warm a bottle, we try to put some hot water into a barf bag along with the bottle and get it to warm up that way. Maybe some of the Asian or European airlines have these features, but with so much code sharing going on, and with so much of the audience for this book being US-based, the books leads you to conclude things that simply aren’t accurate.

Let me clear up a few other things –

Sky cots are available on some transatlantic and transpacific flights. Check with the airlines in advance.

Inflight entertainment may be available, but it may or may not be child friendly. Be prepared to censor. And pay.

Child’s fares are rarely available any longer, except as part of a package where the hotel and air fare are priced in combination. If you want a guaranteed seat for a car seat, you’ll need to buy a ticket. If the plane isn’t full, you will likely be allowed to bring on your car seat and put it in an unoccupied seat at no charge. This applies for infants under the age of 2. Infants may be strapped into the car seat for take off and landing, a far safer place for them to be than on a parent’s lap.

I’ve never seen an infant restraint belt, although I hear they exist. Policies on their use will vary from airline to airline, but a parent should not be surprised if they are not allowed.

I really tried not to be too ethno-centric about this book. But when it’s priced for US sales, I expect it to address issues for the US traveler. And when it comes to air travel, it fails. . . miserably.

When I raised my concern to the Lonely Planet people who sent me the book for review, but questions were answered with a disinterested we’ll let the editors know. I’ve waited to post my review to allow plenty of time for a further response. It’s been long enough, and I’ve heard nothing back.

I know there are lots of other books about traveling with kids that have been written, so I’ve lined up another one to review. I’m hoping that will lead parents in the right direction.

I cannot recommend the Lonely Planet’s Travel with Children based on these errors and/or misinformation. I give it a 2 star rating, and that’s solely based on the country-specific suggestions that make up the second half of the book.

The book is available from Lonely Planet ($19.99), Amazon ($14.39), or from your local book store.

Food expenses are a major budget consideration when planning your vacation, and while you can’t eliminate the expense, there are lots of things you can do to keep it as low as possible. Here are some ideas to keep in mind:

Book accommodations that have a kitchen. Whether it’s staying at a condo, an extended-stay property, or maybe just a room with a coffee maker and refrigerator, these will all presents ways to help you save on food expenses. With a full kitchen you can stock up on supplies so that you’re not dining out for every meal, while still keeping in mind that no one should have to cook every meal of every day – that’s not much of a vacation for the cook. Even if you don’t have a full kitchen, stocking up on some cereal, milk, juice, coffee, and other snacks can help pare down this expense by many dollars each day.

Fill up at an all-you-can-eat buffet

Buy food at the local farmers’ market. Many cities have these, and shopping there will give you a chance to mingle with the locals in addition to getting some fresh food. Pick up bread and sandwich fixings for the room and pack yourself a picnic. Try a local delicacy in a small quantity instead of spending big bucks to try it in a restaurant. If there’s no farmers’ market, find a local supermarket. Picking up some snacks to throw in your purse or a backpack will keep you from overspending while you’re sightseeing.

If you can’t get accommodations with a kitchen, look for a hotel that offers free breakfasts and/or afternoon or evening happy hours. Eliminating breakfast can be a big savings, especially if you’re traveling with a family. Even if it’s not a full cook-to-order meal, grabbing cereal, fruit, juice and coffee will give you some nourishment to face a full day of vacation activities. Many hotels are offering complimentary “manager receptions” with reduced or free alcoholic beverages and light appetizers. If you’ve got plans for the evening, this can be a way to get something light to eat, along with a cheap cocktail, before heading out.

Get take out or delivery service. Picking up a to-go meal, or ordering in pizza, will get you fed without tempting you to overspend with all the other items on the menu. You can drink the beverages you have chilling in the refrigerator, and save even more. Ask for suggestions as the front desk, as most will be able to help give you some recommendations.

Consider the early bird specials. Many a Seinfeld joke has been made on this topic, but restaurants offer discounts to get people in before (and sometimes after) the dinner rush. Sometimes it will be a special (and often limited) menu, sometimes a 2 for 1, or maybe just a coupon for dollars off, but it generally represents a good value. It’s not just for seniors either! If you’ve had a hectic day, don’t pass up the chance to eat early and have a relaxing evening in your room. And save money, too!

Make lunch your main meal. Prices are usually cheaper at lunch, and you can eat somewhere fab for less.
Restaurant Happy Hours can save money on drinks and food. Happy Hour discounts very between discounts for food, drinks, or both, so you may have to do some scouting around to find the best money saving deals.

Look for kids and senior meals. Many restaurants offer special deals to these two important groups of guests, and some restaurants offer a kids eat free program. Don’t be afraid to ask for a senior or kids specials if you don’t see it listed on the menu. A restaurant may not offer a special menu, but may offer a half portion. Ask.

Consider an all-you-can-eat buffet. I’m not a fan of these type of buffets, as I rarely the food is very tasty. Still, if your short on funds and long on hunger, squeezing this into the day may give you the budget relief needed to eat well another day. And they’re usually great for families. Consider making it a lunch buffet and you’ll usually save even more.

Look for a local restaurant rather than a chain. These can be hard to find sometimes, so you may need to ask at the front desk or other people you meet. Try asking where they go to eat, rather than for a recommendation. A little hole-in-the wall place that locals go to will usually be budget friendly.

Use coupons. From AAA to your hotel to those found in a newspaper or magazine, there are lots of coupons available. Use common sense though. It’s not a deal if you’re getting something that you don’t like or if you’re spending more than you normally would to use the benefit.

Have appetizers as an entree or share a meal. You’ll need to be careful here as some restaurants have a minimum person order or will charge a plate fee to split a meal. A salad and appetizer, though, can be enough if you’re not super hungry, and is a great way to check out a restaurant that you’re dying to try – and without breaking the bank.

All of these tips won’t work all of the time, and some may just not be your cup of tea. So pick and choose the ones you can use, and let me know of any others that work for you.

Gail at Large has a great photo taken while going through the tunnel to Boston’s Logan airport.

The Venice Guide writes about a topic near and dear to my heart, Italian gelato. While visiting Italy, it was not uncommon for me to eat it two or three times a day. Now that I’m back at home, this post reminded me of just what I’m missing, and the photo doesn’t come close to doing it justice.

Vintage Seattle has photos from the 1962 Seattle’s World Fair. It’s a little trip down memory lane.

Las Vegas Sun reports on how Las Vegas luxury resorts are offering promotional bargains to fill the rooms, and wondering if it’s a good thing. Why aren’t these rates available when I need a room there?

Vacation time, whether far away or close to home, should be an escape from the ordinary, a time to see and do different things. Some of the same old rules from home shouldn’t apply when you’re on vacation! And that’s especially true with so many people choosing to vacation close to home.

With only a couple of weeks till school starts, there’s still a chance to get in a little special treat before the kiddos have to get back on a schedule!

Playing in a hotel bubble bath

What can you do, though, with limited time and money, that can still be fun for both the kids and the adults? If you don’t have the time and budget to get out of town, find a nice hotel in your city or nearby area, and check in for a fun overnight. Make a nice hotel your vacation destination.

Pick a hotel with a few extra amenities, and plan on getting the largest room that your budget will allow. A nice pool where you can spend the day helps to make up for not having a week at the beach. Room service that allows for breakfast in bed (maybe while still in pajamas) is a special treat that’s different from home, even though it will be more fun than romantic. A couple plasma televisions means everyone can watch their programming on a big screen. A spa, nice restaurant, or lobby lounge can mean that adults can have a few special treats as well.

Plan to check in as early in the day as possible. Even if the hotel has a 4 pm check in, inquire if you can check in early. If rooms aren’t available early, you can often have the bellman hold your bags while you head off to enjoy the pool. You can usually use the hotel amenities and services before you check into your room, so take advantage of this opportunity to extend your hotel vacation.

If this is going to be your only vacation this summer, the important thing is to make it a break from your regular routine. Vacation should be something different. Sleep in, if you normally get up early. Get up early for a head start on the day, if you normally sleep in. And make some special time for everyone.

On a recent hotel stay, a little guy from my extended family fell in love with the spa bathtub. I let him add a few bubbles and then turn on the jets, and this photo represents the results. There were bubbles all over the place, to the total delight of this six year old. Sure if left a bit of a mess (the bubbles cascaded over the sides of the tub) — I cleaned up part of it and left a generous tip for the maid. This was NOT something that he could do at home, but was a simple thing that helped to create a fun vacation memory.

What simple thing can you do to help make a hotel stay fun?

I’ll be heading off to Las Vegas tomorrow, and exploring the family-friendly side of Sin City. While the city once promoted itself as a family-friendly destination, it has long since abandoned that idea, and has had great success (and fun) with “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”

With so many families wishing to vacation close to home this year, and often trying to find a destination that keeps both adults and kids satisfied, Las Vegas seems to be cropping up as destination that’s starting to appeal to families once again.

Las Vegas offers bargains galore, on food and accommodations, has shows suitable for all ages, and hotels that sport some pretty great pool areas. Although Las Vegas will never shed it’s well-deserved party reputation, and I enjoy the city for a weekend getaway, there are lots of families and adults who want to take advantage of the many amenities the city has to offer, while bypassing the more risque activities.

That’s my mission for the next few days. To spot out what’s G-Rated in Sin City.

I already have a pretty decent list to choose from, along with a couple of shows, but if you have some favorite all age-appropriate Las Vegas spots, please leave me a comment with your suggestions.

When people visit Seattle and ask me for recommendations about what to see, the Pacific Science Center is always on my list. In addition to its location on the grounds of the Seattle Center, home of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, the graceful arches and fountains, make it an architecturally pleasant and appealing place to visit. Everyone seems to enjoy the Science Center.

During the World’s Fair, this was home to the US Science Pavilion. Today it is an independent, not for profit science museum, with eight buildings housing hundreds of science exhibits, two IMAX theaters, a large Laser Dome theater, tropical butterfly house, and a planetarium. In addition to the permanent exhibits, the Pacific Science Center hosts a number of traveling exhibits, most recently “Lucy’s Legacy: The Hidden Treasures of Ethiopia.”

My favorite of the exhibits, and a welcome respite after a busy day of touring the Seattle Center, is the Tropical Butterfly House. This building is climate controlled to 80 degrees, with 70% humidity, to nurture the delicate butterflies that call this home. You’ll need to keep your eyes peeled, and this beautiful creatures may light anywhere – the ground, trees, flowers, or on you.

This is a great place for families, and their are exhibits that will appeal to age groups. Kids seem to especially enjoy the Dinosaur exhibit, the Insect Village, and the butterflies.

The Pacific Science Center is located on the Seattle Center campus, and the Tropical Butterfly House is in Building #2. Regular hours are 10 am – 5 pm, Monday – Friday, and until 6 pm on Saturday, Sunday, and holidays. Summer hours are till 6 pm daily.

Admission is $18 for adults, $16 for seniors (ages 65+), $13 for youth (ages 6-15), and $11 for kids (ages 3-5). Tickets can be purchased online or onsite.

Today I’m pleased to introduce you to Jon Rochetti, a fellow travel blogger and friend, and who, over the years, has shared with me his wonderful city of Washington DC. Today he writes a guest post about a trip to Cozumel, Mexico.

—

The image of the submarine varies. Let it be Jules Verne’s submarine, the Nautilus from the book 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the claustrophobic World War II U-boat searching the Atlantic for it’s next target, a nuclear-era stealth “boomer” playing blind man’s bluff with the Soviets, or a deep sea exploration sub diving to uncharted regions of the ocean for an underwater documentary film.

Yet most people probably don’t know that you can take a ride in an actual submarine. Not in a simulator, not at a museum or in a pool, but in the open ocean.

Atlantic Submarines operates submarine tours in 8 destinations in Hawaii, the Caribbean and Guam.

All of the submarine tours visit local reefs, marine parks or, in some cases, shipwrecks. The Aruba submarine tour, for example, passes over two WW-II wrecks, while the Maui tour in Hawaii visits the Carthaginian, a replica of a 19th century vessel that was sunk off Lahaina to create an artificial reef. My recent tour was in Cozumel, Mexico, diving on the one of the world’s most extensive natural reefs.

Most of the Atlantic submarines dive to depths of 100-120 feet, and carry up to 48 passengers in their standard 65-foot (19.8m) submarine . In Waikiki, they operate their 100-foot, 64-passenger Atlantis XIV, the world’s largest passenger submarine.

After a short boat ride, usually about 20-30 minutes, you arrive at the transfer point. Once on site, the sub surfaces from the previous tour and the transfer boat ties up to the sub. Passengers are efficiently transferred from the submarine to the boat and visa-versa.

Anticipation rises as you climb aboard the submarine and are directed toward one of the two hatches. To descend into the submarine, you need to turn around and climb down a short ladder into the sub’s hull.

Two rows of molded back-to-back seats facing outward line both sides of the submarine, and passengers are directed where to sit. All the seats offer the same view, but seats up front allow you to also watch the sub operators in action.

My 40-minute submarine dive started with some brief safety instructions, information about our submarine and recommendations as to what to watch out for during the tour.

Within seconds, we heard “Dive, Dive” over the PA system, followed by a klaxon sounding and we were gently descending into the ocean’s depths. Rows of windows offer great outward viewing for an unforgettable experience as you watch marine life pass by. On some tours you may experience sea turtles and sharks swimming past your window, in others, colorful fish, anemones and other reef life, such as long sea fans and soft corrals swaying with the currnet.

Many people assume that viewing the ocean will be similar to an aquarium with its artificial lights. But in the ocean, at depths over 40 feet or so, the water filters much of the sunlight so everything has a bluish-green tint.

As the sub descended deeper, there was no sense of claustrophobia as most people were mesmerized by the views out of their window. The electronic depth gauge clicked off our depth in feet, eventually reaching our maximum depth – 103 feet (31m).

The ride is comfortable and seems virtually motionless. The operators were able to hover the sub even in the strong Cozumel currents, giving people a chance to see large sea fans or spectacular orange corrals.

And even as a scuba diver, I thought the Atlantis submarine tour was an enjoyable and very memorable experience.

After the tour, each passenger was given a certificate to document their trip to 100 feet below the ocean’s surface.

If you take the tour, remember, a submarine is referred to as a “boat, not a “ship”. And don’t let the music playing from the movie Jaws as you descend into the sub unnerve you. Just sit back, relax and enjoy your “dry” dive.

Prices – Vary by destination – about $100.00 for adults, some destinations offer discounts for teens, $65.00 for children 4-14. Children must be at least 4 years old and a minimum of 3 feet (0.91m) tall. You can pre-book your tickets on the Atlantis Adventures website as most tours offer a discount or around 15%.

Check out Family Car Games, created by a family of four to help your family pass the time with instructions for 100 different games. You can play the games in the car, on a long flight, or while waiting at the airport. Or waiting anywhere for that matter.

I downloaded the app ($1.99) to check it out. And hey – I like games, too! There seemed to be a nice variety, hitting on a number of different themes, from words games to story telling to singing. I recognized the names of some (so there are so classic car games here), but there were lots of titles that I didn’t recognize. They claim that no additional equipment is needed, but I’d recommend a notepad and pen as many of them involve counting or keeping track.

You can select a game by various searches (name, degree of difficulty) or at random (a shaker/spinner much like is on Urban Spoon), and you have the ability to bookmark your favorites so you can play them again and again. Each game is tagged with a degree of difficulty to help you choose age appropriate activity.

It looks like a lot of fun, and next time I’m spending time with a youngster, I’ll give it a more thorough testing out. For $1.99, though, you can’t go wrong!

Download via iTunes or directly from your iPhone or iTouch.

Shopping is one of the top vacation activities, and that’s part of the reason why I’m always on the lookout for great shopping places to write about. Of course, the other reason is that I love a good shopping spot myself!

A great LA shopping experience, from both the shopping and the experience point of view, is the Rose Bowl Flea Market. This is not some lightweight flea market, no sirree! This is a monster event, with over 2,500 vendors attracting 15-20,000 buyers. Operating the second Sunday of every month, you’ll find vintage jewelry, clothing, handmade crafts, antiques, plants, collectibles, and just about everything under the sun. The flea market has been in operation for over 40 years, so you know it’s offering some good stuff.

The market features one-time vendors, setting up shop as an estate sale. Others are brick and mortar businesses, who head to the market hoping to get their wares in front of a different customer base. For others, it’s a small business allowing them to sell their handicraft, art, or some other hobby item. A lot of the vendors are regulars, and you’ll see them week after week, year after year.

Just as there are lots of different kinds of sellers, the buyers are equally diverse.

Some people come to the market to root out great buys and hidden gems. Others to look for vintage designer clothing and jewelry that would be otherwise unaffordable. Others are looking for specific goods. Friends swear that it’s the best place to find a deal on a great outfit that no one else will have. And lots of people come for the experience, to see who else is there shopping, and secretly hoping for a celebrity sighting. There have been lots of them, and many celebs make frequent visits to the flea market.

If you go once, you’ll want to go back again (and probably again). It’s too much to absorb on just one visit.

The Rose Bowl Flea Market is located 1001 Rose Bowl Drive in Pasadena, California. The flea market opens at 9 am, and it is not unusual to see a crowd lined up to be the first to find the good stuff. Admission is $8/person, and children under 12 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. And, since LA is all about being “special,” there are options for an early admission ($15 gets you admitted between 7-8 am), and a special VIP admission ($20 gets you in between 5-7 am). The market closes at 4:30 pm.

You’ll find lots of FREE parking, but if you want to feel like a special VIP, preferred parking (close to the entrance) is available for $10.
