When people visit Seattle and ask me for recommendations about what to see, the Pacific Science Center is always on my list. In addition to its location on the grounds of the Seattle Center, home of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, the graceful arches and fountains, make it an architecturally pleasant and appealing place to visit. Everyone seems to enjoy the Science Center.

During the World’s Fair, this was home to the US Science Pavilion. Today it is an independent, not for profit science museum, with eight buildings housing hundreds of science exhibits, two IMAX theaters, a large Laser Dome theater, tropical butterfly house, and a planetarium. In addition to the permanent exhibits, the Pacific Science Center hosts a number of traveling exhibits, most recently “Lucy’s Legacy: The Hidden Treasures of Ethiopia.”

My favorite of the exhibits, and a welcome respite after a busy day of touring the Seattle Center, is the Tropical Butterfly House. This building is climate controlled to 80 degrees, with 70% humidity, to nurture the delicate butterflies that call this home. You’ll need to keep your eyes peeled, and this beautiful creatures may light anywhere – the ground, trees, flowers, or on you.

This is a great place for families, and their are exhibits that will appeal to age groups. Kids seem to especially enjoy the Dinosaur exhibit, the Insect Village, and the butterflies.

The Pacific Science Center is located on the Seattle Center campus, and the Tropical Butterfly House is in Building #2. Regular hours are 10 am – 5 pm, Monday – Friday, and until 6 pm on Saturday, Sunday, and holidays. Summer hours are till 6 pm daily.

Admission is $18 for adults, $16 for seniors (ages 65+), $13 for youth (ages 6-15), and $11 for kids (ages 3-5). Tickets can be purchased online or onsite.

I’ve been interested in this exhibit for some time, and not that’ we’ll be starting non-stop service to Houston, it’s moving up to the top of my must-see list.

The exhibit features thousands of terra cotta warriors that were found buried in the tomb of China’s First Emperor, Shi Huangdi. The warriors were entombed with him in order that that he would be protected by them throughout eternity. The exhibit features 100 sets of objects, including 20 complete life-size figures, and is representative of the emperor’s army.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science is located at One Hermann Circle Drive in Houston Texas, across from the Miller Outdoor Theater. The museum is open daily, 9 am – 5 pm, and the last timed entrance to the Terra Cotta Warriors is at 4 pm.

Tickets are available online, and are for timed admission. $30 adults, $24 children 3-11 and seniors. Advanced tickets are recommended.

As a special promotion, you can receive a 10% discount at any Houston P.F. Chang’s China Bistro with the presentation of a ticket stub from the exhibit. This promotion is good through November 30th, 2009, and some restrictions apply.

This exhibit runs through October 18th, 2009, after which it travels to the National Geographic Museum in Washington DC. It will be on display there November 19th, 2009 through March 31, 2010.

This fascinates me. And although I’m not a huge Chinese history fan, there’s something about it that intrigues me. After I visit the exhibit, I’ll be sure to post a review along with my impressions of it.

Has anyone been that can chime in with some opinions?

When I visit Hawaii, I love the sunny beaches (of course), but Hawaii is also rich in history and culture, and I always work a couple of these destination into my vacation plans.

Honolulu is rich in military sites and history, and although at time it can be painful to think about, these sites should be on every visitors list of things to see and do. The islands and the country were shaped by the events of Pearl Harbor, and whether you choose to go on your own or as part of a tour, I think any trip to the islands should include a stop at one of these locations.

Punchbowl: Officially the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, this reverent site is the final resting place for veterans of both World Wars as well as Korean and Vietnam. Courts of the Missing are especially somber, as these marble slabs list the name of military personnel who were lost or buried at sea or who were missing in action. There is no charge for admission, and the site is reachable by car or on one of many tours. You can read about why I prefer to experience Punchbowl in solitude in a previous post.

Pacific Aviation Museum: This museum chronicle the history of the attack on Pearl Harbor with original film and photos, and a tour of Hangars 37 and 49. Aviation buffs will love the collection of US and Japanese aircraft. Tickets for the museum require jumping through a bunch of hoops as this is an active military base. You can read what I thought about the Pacific Aviation Museum in a previous post.

Battleship Missouri Monument: The “Mighty Mo” has a history filled with lots of stories starting with World War II, and continuing through right up to Operation Desert Storm. The site now offers multi-media tours, combining footage and narration from some of the men who served onboard this ship, in an attempt to portray a realistic feel for what life onboard was really like. This is the only one of the sites that I’ve not yet visited, and it’s on my list for the next trip.

There are so many great places to see public art, that it’s sometimes easy to pass right by without paying any attention to it. What a mistake!

I’ve always enjoyed the Mustangs at Las Colinas, a bronze sculpture of nine wild mustangs that are in the Williams Square in Irving, Texas. Created by wildlife artist Robert Glen, the mustangs are the largest equestrian sculpture in the world, and commemorate the wild mustangs that inhabited Texas.

The mustangs are portrayed bigger than life, roughly one and a half times their true size, and are shown crossing a stream of water. Fountains on the ground make it look like water is splashing off their hooves as they run through it.

Adjacent to the sculpture, in the West Tower of the Square, is the Mustangs of Las Colinas Museum. The Museum shows the story of how Robert Glen created the sculpture, including a short video, and also houses some of his other work.

Williams Square Plaza is located at 5205 North O’Connor Drive, just north of Highway 114, in Irving, Texas.

Do you have some favorite public art that you enjoy? Please leave a comment telling me about it. I’d love to know what it is and where it’s located.

One of my favorite places in Paris was the Pantheon, a neo-Classical church in the Latin Quarter. It was modeled after the Pantheon in Rome, and topped with a dome similar to Saint Paul’s Cathedral in London. Although it was originally an abbey, it now primarily serves as a burial place for many famous French heroes, leaders, artists, and writers.

This beautiful building was constructed as a result of a promise made by King Louis XV in 1744. He was suffering from a serious and mysterious illness (later believed to be gout), and vowed that if he recovered he would construct a building worthy of the patron saint of Paris.

He recovered, and construction of the Pantheon began in 1758 and was completed in 1789. Many delays were related to lack of finances – a common reason for construction delays even today!

Since its completion coincided with the start of the French Revolution, the Revolutionary government order the building changed from a church to a mausoleum where the remains of great Frenchmen could be interred. Although it has reverted to a church twice since then, today it is once again a mausoleum.

When I walked into the Pantheon it felt austere and cavernous. I felt the need to use my “library voice.”

It’s basically a cross-shaped building, with a domed center. Around the walls are murals depicting religious and revolutionary figures (I particularly liked the series of Joan of Arc), as well at statuary and frescoes.

Continue reading for more information and photos!

In the center of the Pantheon beneath its dome, is a pendulum standing nearly 220 feet tall (67 meters). This is Foucault’s Pendulum, named for Leon Foucault who, in 1851, built the pendulum to conduct experiments demonstrating the rotation of the earth. I was absolutely mesmerized by its simplicity and beauty.

After spending time appreciating all this art and history, you’ll have the option of visiting the necropolis (mausoleum) or climbing stairs to get a view of Paris from the top.

Not entirely morbid, the Pantheon’s necropolis is also a work of art. Here are buried many famous Frenchmen and one famous Frenchwoman. A few of the notables include: Alexandre Dumas (author of the Three Musketeers), Victor Hugo (author of Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame), Voltaire, Rousseau, Emile Zola, Rene Descartes, Louis Braille and Pierre and Marie Curie (the latter the only woman buried here).

Over the years there has been heated debate over who deserves and doesn’t deserve to be buried in this most sacred site. Today, it takes an act of Parliament to be buried here.

I much preferred to climb up, however. All 206 steps to the colonnade beneath the dome. Don’t let the fact that this is a guided tour turn you away from this option. It’s really only “guided” so that you don’t get lost on the way up! And don’t worry about making the climb in record speed. Go slow and rest along the way if you need to.

The view from the top is spectacular – a 360 degree view of all that Paris has to offer. This is one of the best views in the city, in my opinion.

The Pantheon is located at Place du Pantheon in the 5th arrondissement. The nearest metro is Cardinal Lemoine and the nearest RER is Luxembourg.

It is open 10 am – 6 pm October through March. Starting April 1st it is open till 6:30 pm. The upper area can only be visited April through September, and departure times very. I’d recommend checking for a convenient tour time when you first arrive, and then work the remainder of your viewing around that time.

Admission is 8 Euros for adults, 5 Euros for ages 18-25, and free for everyone under 18. It is an included admission on the Paris Museum Pass. If you’ll be visiting several attractions, that’s a cost efficient option.

Kimono: The 20th Century Masterworks of Itchiku Kubota is on display at the Canton Museum of Art (located in the Cultural Center for the Arts, 1001 Market Avenue North), and will run February 8th – April 26th. This is the last stop on its US tour.

Viewing hours are Monday, Friday & Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm; Tuesday – Thursday 10 am – 9 pm, and Sunday noon – 5 pm.

Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors (60+) and Students (ages 13 through college, with ID), and children 12 and under are FREE. Parking is available onsite.

I had no idea how intricate kimonos could be, and what a work of art Kubota has made of them.

Along with the exhibit, Canton is staging a kimono fest, with special events to celebrate the art of kimono. Other evens include Japanese tea ceremonies, Sumi-e (painting) and Shodo (calligraphy) demonstrations, Jujitsu and Samurai demonstrations, and a kite festival.

One of my favorite museums in Paris was the Musee Rodin in the First Arrondissement.
Surrounded by beautiful gardens, this collection of sculptures and other artwork was wonderful.
I took the photo of these hands, and don’t even recall what the sculpture was called. For some reason, I found them compelling.
Join a group of other travel bloggers who are sharing photos today as part of Photo Friday. I loved the travel photos, and think you will, too!

You’ll find giant robotic bugs, up to 96 times they’re normal size, including carpenter ants, emperor scorpion, and a praying mantis. The creatures are around six to eight feet in length, and are displayed in what attempts to portray their natural setting. The robotics allow these bugs to simulate the actions of their real-life counterparts, so you can see moving legs, curling tails, and other normal functions.

Although these bugs are bigger than life, every effort has been made to make sure their depiction and animation is as real life as possible. In fact, the Entomological Society of America has endorsed the exhibit.

There are lots of interactive displays that allow you to learn while still having fun. A couple of kid favorites are the “Bug’s Eye View” which allows you to view your friends through the eyes of a bug, and “The Better to Eat You With” which shows how insects chew plants and suck blood.

Eeeeewwwww!

Oh to be a Mummer, now that New Year’s is almost here!

This is the 103rd year for Philadelphia’s New Year’s Day Mummers Parade, and this is one of those festivities that sound like so much fun. I’m hoping that a few of my Philly readers chime in here and let me know if it’s as much fun as it sounds. (Kelly? Caroline? Anyone?)

The history of the Mummers goes back to the Roman Festival of Saturnalia. Latin laborers wore masks and marched around giving gifts. There was also a Celtic version that was a little bit more like trick-or-treat, featuring costumes and little gifts. Both events were filled with pageantry, enthusiasm, and more than a little bit of noise.

Philadelphia got into the act in 1901 with the first official Mummers Parade. Unofficially large celebrations like this had been going on in Philadelphia for some time even though there were laws prohibiting it. All that noise and merry-making was deemed too much of a nuisance. No one was ever convicted of breaking this law, and the revelry eventually became sanctioned.

Since its inception, the Mummers Parade has evolved into a full fledged festival with thousand of capped, capped, and sequined participants strutting their stuff. Mummers don’t walk, march, or even dance. They cakewalk — a strut that has become closely identified with the Mummers and the parade.

The festivities last for the entirity of New Year’s Day, and much like Mardi Gras in New Orleans, is a competition between the Mummers club around the area. Each club creates a theme, and then develops it with costumes, props, and pageantry that supports the theme. This is BIG business, and thousands of dollars go into club competitions. Although there is some money to be won, it’s really all about bragging rights for the entire year!

Parade entries are divided into four divisions:

Comic Clubs focus on satire and ridicule, and poke fun at anyone and everyone. From the mild to the ribald, anyone can be a target.

Fancy Clubs focus on beautiful colors, costumes, and elaborate, themed presentations. This is pageantry at its finest. (top photo)

String Bands focus on a merger of music and costumery into a uniquie kind of band. You’ll find a variety of strings, glockenspiels, saxophones, accordions and drums, and lots of accompanying dancers.

Fancy Brigades focus on performance. They march in the parade, but are judged during on their intricate dance routines during a later outdoor performance. (See video below.)

If you’ll miss New Year’s Day in Philadelphia, you can learn a little more about the Mummers at the Mummers Museum (1100 South 2nd Street, Philadelphia). It looks like one of those quirky museums that never fails to grab my attention.
