A Crochet hook with heart

Yesterday, out of the blue, an unexpected phone call came that really knocked us on our keesters. It involved some unfinished business around the death of Jim’s sister, whom we love/d very much. Our heads were reeling and it made us look at our ability to maintain our equilibrium, equanimity, grace and balance. Ultimately, it forces us to live up to our spiritual practices by forgiving someone that we have been very very angry at.
I process emotional/spiritual stuff best by working with metaphor. I had a prompting that I needed to make a crochet hook that symbolized love and forgiveness. (Making crochet hooks and spoolknitters and other fiber arts tools is not only a way that I earn my living, but it is a part of my life’s learning journey…..)
So, I went out to the workshop. A couple of years ago, we were given a piece of arbutus wood. I LOVE arbutus wood, and we have been saving it. I cut a length of it, and started carving, filing, sanding and shaping until I had made a crochet hook with a heart.
I brought it into the studio and started drawing, and painting and burning and sanding some more…….
Here it is….
Crochet is a profoundly healing and meditative process. For me, making a hook that is about loving kindness was a prayerful act that I hope will help create more beauty……
Life is full of unexpected twists and turns. Sometimes we are taken aback and shocked by those things that feel unwelcome and unpleasant. Well… it’s part of the learning.
Albert Einstein said that being creative means being able to see the world in new ways.
If ever there was a time that we needed to see the world with new eyes, it is now. Personally and globally….. here’s to creativity, and to kindness and forgiveness.
hugs all round
