My children recently watched a video on learning how to knit. We were impressed to create our own knitting needles, by using what we have in our own back yard. Simply find some straight sticks and either sand them to a point or use a pencil sharpener. Another “green” way of living is to grow your own vegetable garden. It has been fun for the whole family and is also a wonderful way to put organic food on the table.

  2. Denise says:

I like making knitting looms out of recycled materials like toilet paper tubes, and juice bottles! Cheap, easy and green!

  3. Hanna says:

If you’re into green yarns, you should definitely check out the educational website I put together called Green Knitter (http://greenknitter.com). I talk about all the values that are a part of being green, from local to organic to vegan, as well as impacts of different fibers, and I have a long chart of different green yarns.

I’ll be looking forward to seeing other people’s suggestions!

(oh, and you don’t have to enter me in the contest, since I don’t have kids!)

my family and i recycle everything (it’s taken hubby almost 20 years to really catch on, lol) but we are all involved in the recycling and composting. We have been taking aluminum cans and creating garden and pot stakes out of them for ourselves and all the neighbors. We have also been hanging old pc cd’s in the garden as they sparkle and keep the birds away from nibbling.

  5. Chia says:

I save my cheap yarn for knitting blankets for animal shelters and I use my unwanted practice handspun as plant ties in my garden.

  6. KT says:

I save all my yarn ends and random bits of leftover yarn to use as stuffing for small knit toys. That way I don’t use fiberfill and the random bits get used rather than thrown away. I also know people who leave their yarn trimmings out in the backyard during nestbuilding season for the birds. She has really colorful nests in the trees around her house!

  7. denise says:

I save all of my yarn leftovers and make designs with construction paper and glue with my boys. We also make cat toys, if I have the right length.

  8. Chrissy says:

I donate my leftover yarn to the local YMCA daycare. They love to get donations for crafts and I feel good because I’m not storing my leftovers to use someday. Someday never comes!

  9. CINDY ROMM says:

GOING GREEN IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR OUR CHILDRENS FUTURE. WE HAVE TO TEACH THEM TO CORRECT THE ENVIRONMENT AND MAKE IT BETTER. I TEACH MY DAUGHTER NOT TO BE WASTEFUL WITH YARN OR CLOTH OR ANYTHING. EVERYTHING AN BE USED FOR SOMETHING OR RECEYLED FOR SOMETHING ELSE.
