Crocheted wire mermaid necklace

Crocheting wire is hard on your tendons.

But it’s worth it. In fact, it’s positively  addictive!

You can mold and shape your pieces as you crochet – it’s really exhilarating to have them take shape in your hands.

When I was crocheting the mermaid necklace, it was obvious to me that I needed to fill her up with treasures.

You can’t see them very well in the pic, but they peek through the spaces of the stitches in a really intriguing way.

When crocheting with wire, keep your hands loose, and don’t work for too long, or it’ll be pain pain pain! But, the results are worth it!

One of my New Year’s resolutions is to get back into my jewelry and crochet crafting. This is a good combination of both.

Did you use craft wire or did you use colored, softflex wire for this?

Actually, I went to a wire warehouse and bought a really heavy honkin’ big spool of copper wire. That’s what I used for the crocheted mermaid necklace. (and about a million other things, and am STILL using it….. there’s MILES of wire on it!)

A friend sent me a smaller spool (but still quite large) of wonderful braided wire that she bought from a vendor in Japan. She thought it would be the size of the teeny spools you get at the craft store, so didn’t think much of ordering several spools. When the spools turned out to be 6 inches across and 6 inches tall, she was floored. Bless her heart, she sent me one! I love it.

I wondered about the wire because I have a terrible nickel allergy. I ordered some Softflex because it is steel coated with nylon and am hoping it doesn’t trigger a reaction.

It sounds like you are in “high clover” with the wire you have!

  4. hi
noreen love the mermaid. i’ve been crocheting wire for about 12 years and am still addicted to it, so get use to it… it will sneek up on you and you will keep doing it! you didn’t say what gauge copper wire you used, usually 26,28 and 30 are good for crochet. 24 can be used, i get the feeling back in my thumbs after a month or so!

you mentioned that braided wire you friend bought, if she is interested in selling a spool, i would love to get one, i look for different kinds all the time and it sounds lovely. please stop by my site at http://imageevent.com/patmcaudel to see some other ideas. give a shout if i can assist you, from the looks of it, you aren’t gonna need it!! great job!
