Day of the Dead goodies

My friend, Gwen,
went off to see a fabulous show of Dia de los Muertos art and crafts. She wrote a lovely posting about it
She had asked me if she should pick up anything for me while she was there. I said, oh, yes please! Milagros, and some little skulls… And here is what she found:
The milagros and crazy little skullie with curlers (!?) look to me like the making of wild little doll…. spoolknitted or crocheted, for sure.
The 2 littlest skulls would make great earrings - also spoolknitted.
hmmmmm….. I think my darlin’ daughter in law might get a kick out of them!
I love the little girl milagro…. apparently this is a representation of being grateful for your daughters…. which I am (I include my daughter-in-law and neices and young friends who feel like daughters in my gratitude list!)
I was disconcerted by the Lady Skeleton in the purple dress at first. She had a cigarette in her mouth, which I found disturbing.
We lost a sister to lung cancer last year, so, the cigarette was just too much for me. (When we see people smoking, both Jim and I have an intense, “Oh, please DON’T smoke”, response).
I cut the cigarette off. And, ~then~ I was able to really appreciate the zaniness of the doll. Ooooooh so glittery….
Sadly, her right arm didn’t arrive with her, so some time, when I am not working to deadline (like I am now), I will figure out how to give her a new arm. She’s very small, so it will be a challenge! I think I’ll crochet her a little sling! LOL!
I am grateful to learn about the very positive festival that the Dia de los Muertos truly is. Having had many family and friends die in the last couple of years has taught me that it is essential to celebrate the lives of those we love. That’s what the Day of the Dead is about…. not about darkness, but a celebration of love and life.
And, sometimes, we need to find ways to stick out our tongues at Death.
And, what the heck… to even cut the cigarette off off Lady Death’s face if it helps the celebration!
Here’s to life! and love!
hugs all round,
Noreen

The Daughter-In-Law does get a kick out of it! I think I may have to go to Mexico for that festival!
Oh dear Noreen, I have just read your post about my package of goodies and it seems it was not all it was cracked up to be. I really should have expalined how completely anti-cigarette I am also. Ever so grateful that I never took up that addictive habit. YarnCrochet is sufficient! It was just that the purple lady was so much more appealing than any of the other colors they had available, I had to get it for you. I am so glad you had the uourage to cut off the ciggie. Re: the missing arm. I am so sorry! I have no clue how that could have happend. Did I buy it that way? If we lived closer, I would surely take it back for an exchange!
Oh, Gwen! Not to worry about the ciggie! I was jolted by it and took action on it. As soon as it was gone, I was delighted with her. And, as for her missing little arm, I am going to crochet or spoolknit her a fetching little sling for it! After all, Even Lady Muerta needs help sometimes! LOL!
I LOVE her purple glitter! She now lives in my dollhouse.
And, my daughter in law is quite taken with the skullies! I am in the process of spoolknitting a body for the skullie with the curlers. I cracked up at the pink curlers. I couldn’t believe the wacky sense of humour behind them…. I would never in a million years have thought of them. I spent my childhood wearing dreadful curlers to bed (useless, utterly useless on my bone straight hair!), and I hated them with a passion. Now, I see the humour in them!
It was a very thought provoking little box of goodies, and I appreciate it soooooooo much!
THank you thank you!
hugs
Noreen
