How is the economy affecting your yarn buying?

As most of us are aware, the economy isn’t as healthy as it could be. In fact, it’s pretty bad. With stores struggling and going out of business, everything is affected, from how you buy groceries and gas to your holiday shopping.
One area where I’ve had to cut back rather drastically is the amount of yarn I buy. I guess this may the case for many hobbyists, whether you build model planes or scrapbook. For many of us, when it comes to “am I going to buy more canvas or feed myself?”, necessity usually wins out.

So what’s a dedicated knitter to do? Fortunately, there are still ways to weather this economic storm and still buy the supplies you want and need until the financial situation improves.
Online shops like KnitPicks and elann offer great savings on good-quality yarn, books and accessories. You should also check your local yarn shop’s clearance bins or knitting forums, where other crafters might be willing to trade or sell their unwanted yarn at discount prices.
Look for coupons in Sunday’s paper for your local craft stores, as well.
There’s no need to give up a hobby you truly love even if you can’t afford to buy all the yarn you want. You might find a less expensive brand that you may not have tried before and end up loving it. There are ways to buy affordable supplies so that you can continue to indulge in your favorite pastime.

Knitters don’t always use yarn! You can also come up with alternate materials like tee shirts ,cassette tape and plastic bags.
Below are some of my favorite links for each of these materials

Thanks, Dark Alice, for the great suggestions. Not only can you get your crafty fix in, you can also recycle!
