Hankering for Yarn

How to spin tissue paper into yarn

I’ve had lots of requests for a video on how to spin tissue paper into yarn, so today, I made this video tutorial.

I have to apologize

for a mistake

that I made

when I was

making the video.

I have been

plying yarn

like mad, and

I always spin it

counterclockwise

when plying yarn. So, I kind of was running on ‘automatic’ and just kept spinning counterclockwise, which is not a problem, as you can spin tissue paper yarn either clockwise or counterclockwise.

BUT… I said I was spinning clockwise, when I wasn’t. So, doh, brain function.

Actually,

ahem.

The entire

video is

rather ‘casual’!

My husband came

into the studio

as I was shooting

the video, which

sent the dogs into

orbits of exultant and noisy delight.

And, at the end of the video, I whalloped into the camera stand and sent it careening. Oops….. ah well… c’est la vie!

It may be wonky, but it still shows you how to upcycle tissue paper into rather spiffy yarn.

  1. Thanks William :)
    Isn’t that gorgeous!

  2. Katherine says:

Huh, never thought of that before. I would use it for the admittedly not terribly exciting wrapping of gifts, instead of raffia. You could really match the “raffia” with the other wrappings well using this, and could maybe even use parts of paper I trimmed off for it. Thanks!

  3. Hi Katherine
    Yes! that would be gorgeous!!!
And, besides it’s so much fun!

Noreen, as wonderful as always. I love hearing you; it’s almost like visiting. And I’d seen the spinning paper yarn as a class on your website and thought it sounded like fun. Now you’ve made it easy–even having never spun, it looks doable.

    love you

  9. Hi Jorel
Spinning paper really is fun… of course, a little video is not a replacement for a full workshop, in which all kinds of magic unfolds, but it’s an invitation! Grinning from ear to ear!

  10. Perry says:

What fun! I can’t wait to try this and use it in my weaving! Thanks! (Loved the doggies)

  11. Hi Perry
The dogs are my close and constant companions, so they are frequently involved in videos! LOL
And, yes, the paper yarn is great in weaving, and knitting, and crochet, too, of course!

  12. Jorel says:

OK, I tried it and it’s actually as easy as you make it look. I’m having some trouble with joining my strips but I know I’ll get it figured out. Thanks again for another creative spark!

  13. Hi Jorel
Hurrah! The joining gets really easier and easier…. it’s just finding the rhythm of it.
Hope you have fun with the yarn!
