Hankering for Yarn

Knit a poem

Over the years, I’ve woven a lot of words, knitted and crocheted lots of pictures and been heavily influenced by poetry.

So, when I heard about the ‘Knit a Poem’ event, I was enchanted.

The mission of Poetry Society in Britain is to advance the study, use and enjoyment of poetry.  It’s a charitable organisation founded a hundred years ago. Their mandate is to provide support, information and merchandise for specialists and also to the general public.  They are engaging and expanding the quality of poetry, and inviting people to be engaged by it and involved with it through events, publications, café, promotions and prizes .

But, back to the yarnie content, here is the link to the KNIT A POEM EVENT

Over 500 people are needed to knit a giant poem to celebrate the Poetry Society’s centenary.
Participating knitters will be sent a template for an individual letter (more if they are super-keen).
They will knit their letters at home, and all the squares will then be combined later in the year into a huge poem.
Knitters will use their own odds and ends of wool (doubleknit) to complete the work.
Letters can be sent in to the Society, but knitters will also be invited to a big knit-together event.
A small booklet of ‘poems to knit by’ will be sent to every participant.
