Knitting from vintage pattern books

In June, I found a wonderful vintage knitting book that probably came off Noah’s ark. It’s full of class and timeless designs with enchantingly bizarre captions under the photos.

I have been working
on knitting
leggings for
our soon to be
grandbaby.
The pattern
is written for
2 needles, but
I thought…
oh really…
these leggings
are just a bi-furcated sock!
I can knit them in the round.
It was slightly odd to translate the pattern, as there was a very different way of constructing a knitting pattern in the 40’s, when I assume this book was written. It took a bit of neuron crunching to shift the pattern from 2 needles to dpn’s. But, it was do-able and worth the trouble.

I found the little foot
part was smallish for regular sock
needles, so, I cut down
a single ‘orphan’ knitting needle,
and made a set of short
little dpn’s that are perfect for
knitting very little feet.
I finished the leggings today, and
they were very gratifying to knit!
I think I’ll wait till the baby is born before I start the next set of leggings…. to be perfectly honest, I am not sure about sizes and proportions for baby leggings. I hope that these leggings will fit our Baby.
Oh… wait a minute…I can just buy a sewing pattern and lay the knitted leggings on it… (smacking forehead)…. hmmmm…. maybe I don’t have to wait to start more of them.
This is a baby who is being well and truly yarn blessed by his/her Mamma, Auntie, and Nanna … the hooks and needles are flying in anticipation of our wee one needing lots of warm coziness.

Noreenie, these are so precious. Chloe is so lucky to have a mom who can make gorgeous family heirlooms to run through the clan. I can’t WAIT for the baby!!!
) And, uhm, I was hoping for a picture of the bloomers as a hat for grandma. I got off the viddy with you last night thinking they reminded me of the nightcaps that they wore in The Night Before Christmas.
I think — and you know how incredibly remarkable my insights are into these kind of things — that if the baby is a boy you shoule make him a wee tiny kilt. I mean, with the clan this family is being born into!
You, my dear, are a genious!
Love Love and love,

Thank smiley face came out all wonkified. Sorry….
Maitri, bumbling back to bed after just getting the dogs out in the rain…
