Hankering for Yarn

Mardi Gras Mask-5

In Part 4, I got the tatting stitched to the mask.

I wanted to crochet on the mask as well, but my first attempt was not successful. I used a soft cotton that looked frowzy.

I had wanted to use Lover’s Knot stitch, which is one of my favorite stitches.  At first, I covered the mask with it, in the  soft fuzzy cotton. wrong wrong wrong….

I went to bed, and figured I’d know what to do in the morning.  I find so often, that I’ll go to bed feeling frustrated with a design problem and will wake up with a blast of inspiration, and a KNOWING of exactly-EXACTLY! what needs to be done!  Does that ever happen to you?  Isn’t it great?

Anyhow, I woke up, and just KNEW that I needed to crochet chains on the mask to give some of the linear definition of the butterfly.

So, I used the #50 crochet cotton and a 1.5 mm hook, and crocheted the lines:

yes! YES! that’s exactly right!

Then, I realized that I needed to go outside the lines with the Lover’s knot (AKA Solomon’s Knot) stitch, and have it soften the outside edges of the mask:

yes. yes.  Y E S! ! ! ! !

It’s so much prettier in real life than in the photo, but, there you have it.

Mardi Gras carousing? nah, I’d rather stay home and spool knit, tat and crochet. And, oh yes, work in the woodworking shop.

But, if you’re going to do a little celebrating for Mardi Gras, you might want to get out some yarn or thread and flip a  few stitches first!
