Here’s a quick tip to keep cabled projects from flaring out at your bound-off edge. It’s helpful for scarves, especially, because while your cast-on edge can be neat and square, sometimes the bind-off isn’t.

When you bind-off, decrease 1-2 stitches for every inch of width. So, if your project is 8 inches wide, decrease 8-16 stitches as you bind off. Try to do this at equal or close to equal intervals; just k2tog (knit 2 together) every now and then instead of just knitting one stitch, but perform the bind off the regular way. Instead of trying to bind off tightly to prevent the flare problem, this allows you to still keep your bind-off rather loose.
