Vintage yarn gadgets are heart stealers

When you are a yarn lover, chances are good that you’ll fall in love with gadgets and devices that allow you to make, manipulate, and play with yarn in lots of fun ways.
Yesterday, I posted about a wonderful box of goodies that one of my friends (who is also a fiber artist) sent me- with a set of Magic Looms in it.
As well as the Magic Looms,
she sent me a set of
flower looms,
which made me
so happy.
I know, I am easily
amused…. but these
are such charming
little looms-
The booklets say
that they were sold in 1970.
They feel a touch brittle, and, given that I …read more

Crochet My Shadow with Upcycled Paper Yarn

Crochet My Shadow with Upcycled Paper Yarn

I love taking photographs of shadows.
I find the distortion and playfulness
of shadow images to be endlessly fascinating.
For a long time,
I have been
contemplating
designing
a series of
scarves that
are crocheted
shadows.
I have been posting for days now about spinning the streamers from the Blue Man show.
I wove a Unicorn with the first of the upcycled paper yarn, then a Fairy doll, then a basket.
As I came to the end of the paper yarn, I realized that I just had to do something very special with the yarn.
When I flipped my sketchbook open to start some new drawings, I saw sketches and notes that I have …read more

Crochet last Blue Man Streamer paper yarn

Crochet last Blue Man Streamer paper yarn

For the last few days, I have been posting about spinning paper yarn from streamers that I brought home from the Blue Man show.
With the upcycled paper yarn,
I wove a Unicorn.
crocheted a fairy
and crocheted a basket.
I am down to the
last of the Blue Man
streamer paper yarn,
so I feel like I want to
make something
that is a ’statement’ piece…..
I have been mulling and mulling it over… after all, this is quite special yarn, so I want to design and make something that is worthy of the yarn. I also want it to be fun, and quirky and funky and tongue in cheek.

Blue Man streamers become fairy doll

Blue Man streamers become fairy doll

Yesterday,  I posted about the Unicorn that I wove with paper yarn that I spun from streamers from the Blue Man show.
Today, I used the
upcycled paper yarn
to crochet a
fairy doll to
keep the Unicorn
company.
Crocheting the
paper yarn is
a touch tricky.
It will break  if you pull too hard on it.
At the same time,
it has no flex to it,
so it is a lot like
crocheting wire.
So, you have to
be gentle with
the paper yarn,
and gentle with
your tendons.
It’s a delicate balance.
Rather like riding a unicorn…..
While I was crocheting the fairy,
I had some questions.
Here’s the  fairy doll.
I was wondering….
should I add hair?
should I paint
the fairy doll
a color,
or combination
of …read more
