Tatting shuttles and book

Today, a friend and I were ‘chatting’ on Skype, and we were both multi-tasking. My typing can be ‘interesting’ at the best of times, and when I get distracted, sometimes, the typing can get downright challenged!

We agreed that multi-tasking isn’t always the most efficient way to do things!
Efficient or not, I do tend to be a multi-tasker.
Earlier in the day, I had been multi-tasking like mad.
I was working on a couple of projects at the same time,
including finishing up the varnishing on
on a whole bunch of tatting shuttles
that I have carved over the last several months.
Usually, I varnish just a few at a time,
but today, I decided to have a
feast of varnishing…. so, oops…
I ran out of room on my usual ‘hangie-uppie’ thingies,

So, my millinery stand,
Ms Millie,
(a vintage hat stand that
I just love in all it’s kitchy
sci-fi-ish, 1960-ish glory)
got pulled into use as a
drying rack for the
tatting shuttles.
Thank you, Ms Millie!
She worked a fair treat.
So, I’m not the only one
in the studio
who was multi-tasking, today…..
Even Ms Millie, in her own
special way, multi-tasked!
In the header of this entry, I mentioned a tatting book…. well…

If you are at all interested in tatting,
or learning to tat,\
or improving your tatting,
or learning more about tatting,
then this little book is
a must have.
‘An Illustrated Dictionary
of Tatting’ by
Judith Connors, published by
Kangaroo Press
is a comprehensive dictionary
of tatting terms and techniques.
It is illustrated with clear and precise line drawings and the definitions are well thought out, and obviously a great deal of research went into the writing of this book.
It is a reference book of the first order and I highly recommend it.

Noreen, I love your Ms Millie. What an objet d’art. I would love to see a small tea candle underneath her face at night.
Hi William
Oh what a great idea! another multi-task for her…. and given the insane weather we’ve been having, (with power going out) candles are sometimes the way of lighting the evening up around here….
I hadn’t thought of lighting her up…. hm…. actually, an led light inside her, with a straw hat on her head as a shade, might make a fun lamp!
Thanks for the inspiration!
You know, pasta drying racks work well for drying little things too. When I was painting bobbins for bobbin lace, I made little hooks from paper clips for hanging them from the rack.
Hi Lynn
I haven’t seen a pasta drying rack, but ~whacking forehead with back of hand~ I do have a folding wire clothes drying rack!
It never occurred to me to use it for drying tatting shuttles…. thank you so much for your suggestion!
Fab!
perfect day for me to get my e-bay bootee.. I just “won” a loom CRAFT LOOM – LILY SPEED-O-WEAVE METAL ?? assuming it was just a potholder loom, this one has very large spaces between each other. I looked a your video online but am somewhat disappointed that I can’t make tighter weaved, well anything tighter weaved on it. Can I? any tips? oh also, the shuttles, mine came with 2 original ones, the people owned a craft shop years ago and this was their “sample making item” they kept at home to know how to use things. Do you need 2 for these?
Hi Tricia
The Lily Speed-o-weave is a really fun tool that you can use to make all kinds of neat things with….
Have you watched this video to see how to work with it?
When you warp in the 3 layers, over all sets of pegs, you can create a very dense, closely interlaced fabric:
Try a sample weave, following the instructions in the video and I think that you’ll be pleased…

And, no, you don’t NEED to have 2 shuttles, but it’s sure nice to have 2 of them, so you are a lucky ducky indeed!
