Hankering for Yarn

The story of a new spoolie: There’s a reason why Jim is the woodsmith and I am the yarnie!

Here is a pic of the Synchronicity Spoolie that I made for myself. And, this is one of those:

‘Don’t try this at home’ stories………..

Jim had turned a ‘Syncronicity Sisters’ spoolie, and rejected it, thinking that it was too short.

He is trained to put his reject pieces in a bucket for me. This way,I can use his ‘nyet’ pieces in dollmaking etc. I have insisted on him doing this, as his ‘nyets’ often end up as dolls!
When I found this nekkid (I hadn’t gotten my paintie little hands on it yet  ;)   ) Synchronicity Sister in the reject bucket I was shocked.

It is POIFECK!

It was a little short, (which is why he rejected it) so I glued a layer of wood on top.

I clamped it up and carried on making the Merrie Sunshine dolls and Cordelia’s that I had gone out to the workshop for in the first place……..  :P
When the glue dried, I unclamped it, trimmed it to shape.

Then, I thought, “ah, Jim’s not home right now, so, I’ll just finish this spoolie up myself!”.

Yah…….. right….. cue the ‘doo doo doo doo’ music…….
Hmmm… here’s the poifeck hole driller! It looks like the mother of all drill bits- woohoo!  I am gonna use this awesome hole driller to drill me  big hole in this little spoolie.

You can see where I am going with this, can’t you?

Yep, it bound up in the hole, started whirling like an atom that was contemplating a split. Well, the ’split’ happened to be  on my hand -  in several places.

Oucch !!!!!!!!! Much hopping up and down, and popping off a few words that would spin my mother’s head right round!
I went and got one of Jim’s schmancy work gloves, leaked into it with my now bloody lil’ paw, and held on for dear life, to get the spoolie unstuck.

Ahem.

It sliced  the glove (oops…. sorry, Hon!) quite effieciently.
More blood, and now,  my hand is  burned, too…. ow again! (more hopping, and a few more choice words)
Grrrrrrrr, I was feeling embarrassed…….and quite shirty!
I ~reeeeeeeeeeeely~ didn’t want Jim to come home to a stuck spoolie on the drill press. I mean, after all, I am (usually) quite competant in the workshop. Well, not if you want a square corner, but that’s another story. But, round things…. well, I am good at ~ROUND~ things! usually….
Harrumph! I went and got a whalloping huge clamp, and reefed on it like mad.

I turned on the drill press and held my breath! WOOHOO!

I scrunched up my face, and made a sound similar to the one that launched my babies into the world.

The clamp held, and the bit whirred into action, and I was able to finish drilling the hole, without breaking the spoolie, or my wrist with a spinning clamp.
I took out the big wazoo bit, and put in the wee one that we use for setting the pegs.
Oh, bliss! It was just such a breeze after the monster bit!

I set the pegs and raced back into the studio to start drawing, burning and painting.

Note to self: Leave the drilling to Jim from now on. yep.

But, I am so in love with this little spoolie that it was worth the owees.

Also, it reminds me once again, of what a master Jim is.

Bless him. Still crazy ’bout him after all these years! LOL!

I just uploaded some pics to our website to show a few of the other ‘Synchronicity Sisters’. If you click on

Synchronicity Sisters

the page should come up. Unless the drill bit is stuck….

:D

happy spooling! (I’ve told Jim that he has to go out to the workshop and get turning. More! I want more spoolies!~

cackling like a slightly demented hen over her chicks, er, spoolies…….)

hugs all round

Noreen

I hope your hand is feeling better. Your spoolie is beautiful! I love the image your made on it–I would love to have something of the kind. Very pretty.

Thanks so much, Isela! And, yes, thanks the cuts, burns, bruises are all doing much better.
My brother was very upset when he read my blog entry….. he said that a friend of his almost lost his thumb on the drill press!
Yikes! that gives one pause, doesn’t it?
    blessings,
    Noreen

Your little spoolie is gorgeous, but I was cringie big time when I came to the part about the blood. Hope your hand is better. That had to hurt!!

  4. Noreen says:

Sorry about that! It wasn’t a ~lot~ of blood! It was just a little leaky! My brother gave me royal heck after he read my entry. He chastized me that a friend of his nearly lost his thumb to the drillpress. Eep!
I promise to be VERY careful!
    Sorry to gross you out!
    blessings
