Hankering for Yarn

Travel Essentials for a Yarnie

When a Yarnie heads out on a journey, there are some things that are just essential to take along to make the trip a happy one.

We’ve just returned from a perfectly lovely holiday.

Before I get everything totally put away again, I thought that I would make a list of the yarnie tools and other artie/craftie stuff that I always take along when we travel.

Pinkie and Blue Bear are 2 tiny teddy bears that have been traveling with my husband and I forever. (I made them long ago and far away, and they have been traveling ever since.)

When we get ready for a trip, Pinkie and Blue Bear are top of the ‘have to take along’ list.

We are pleased that they now have excellent little folding chairs to make their travels more comfortable!

So what else is essential for a Travelling Yarnie (besides small rather worn bears)?

Well…. yarn and thread, of course.

I always seem to take waaaaaaaaaaaaay more yarn than I can ever use, but I just can’t seem to reduce the amount of comfort yarn that has to come along with me – just in case….

And, of course, I always buy more yarn and thread on the trip….

That’s a tatting shuttle in Pinkie’s chair with her, because I never leave home without several tatting shuttles.

And, there are 3 small looms in the pic- because I always ALWAYS take along at least 2 potholder looms, and at least one small frame or peg style loom.  (Small inkle looms are great to travel with, too)

I have a pouch full of plastic crochet hooks that I always take with me, and a nice selection of steel crochet hooks, too.

And, darning needles and scissors and a tape measure and dental floss (good for teeth and cutting threads, too).

Being an addicted sock-aholic, I always take along a set of dpn’s. (Although this time, I crocheted a sock instead of knitting it… must finish it and make it’s partner. )

Hmmm…. I can’t see a spool knitter on the table with Pinkie and Blue Bear, but several of them came along  with us, and worked hard to earn their keep on the trip!

Oh yes…. I love Moleskine notebooks, so at least one of them always comes along – great for writing down all the inspiration that a wonderful journey triggers.

And, of course, a sketchbook, pencils, pens and a small package of crayons.

Oh! I almost forgot…. velcro straps and a Swiss army knife. Seriously- Velcro straps are sooooooooooo handy – I use them in a heap of different way around the studio and they are fantastic to have on a trip. (so are cable ties).

Camera, too…. right… almost forgot that …..

So…. that’s what was in my project bags for our trip.

I take too much yarn, too, but I have lately been able to restrict myself more. Everyone seems happier that way. Next trip will involve at least two shuttles as well and all fibery accoutrements — hooks, markers, scissors, tape measure — everything in the notions bag.

My next trip will involve a medium-sized fiber festival, though, so I certainly hope to bring back a little more than I brought along.

  2. Hi Katherine
I also LOVE going into second hand stores….. and this holiday, I was especially lucky, as I found lots of stitchery goodies in the second hand stores. So much fun!
Tatting shuttles are great to travel with- they are so small and you can have hours and hours of fun with a small amount of thread!
Have a splendid time at the fiber festival- and do tell what all you find there!
