Ah, the Twinkie snack cake; what could be more emblematic of the U.S. of A? Try to mess with such cultural delights, and our citizenry gets up in arms. This happened recently when the Twinkie folks decided to fill our cakes with banana cream, instead of tried-and-true American vanilla. Turns out the banana flavor approach isn’t new after all. People in the early days of the Twinkie phase got their fix with this original filling. Due to a banana shortage in World War II, the filling turned vanilla, becoming the gastronomic delight that we eat today in versions that vary from deep-fried to a berry base when used as a poor man’s strawberry short cake. We can think of eating this not-so-new banana filling as being downright patriotic. So now we have choices when we make our way to the Twinkie shelf. Oh, yes, life is good. Read all about the Twinkie and its history.

I tried the banana twinkies…I liked the banana twinkies. I don’t pretend to imagine for a moment that they are good for me…but what fun would filing them under health food be?
I think if we can divorce ourselves from our habits, we might find that the original concoction was really the most interesting.
What do you think?
I have a scary one for you. Some tim ago when I was little my mother being the health nut that she was fed me all kinds of nasty stuff. Carob instead of chocolate and the elusive carot cakce twinkie.
Where the hell did she get these. It looked like a dark twinkie with raisins and orange stripes in it.
It was store bought because it came in a sealed clear plastic wrap. But nobody had the nerve to come forward and show me a box and from what i see who ever came out with it pulled it off the market very fast and would possibly deny it.
