They say necessity is the mother of invention. For people whose life is on the line day-in and day-out everything is a resource.
Silly String – Some enterprising soldiers have taken to hosing a suspect room with this stuff before they enter because it hangs on trip wires without actually activating booby traps.
Tampons – Often used by battlefield medics to plug temporarily plug holes until safely out of the field.
Rubbers and Rubber-Bands – Wrapped over a rifle muzzle, this will keep out sand. But the material is thin enough to shoot right through without much effect on your bullet’s trajectory should you need to fire your weapon suddenly.
Scrap-Metal – Bolted to Humvees as supplemental armor, know as “Hillbilly” armor.
Old Bullet Proof Windshields – Welded to the gun turrets on Humvees to give the gunner extra protection. Quickly becoming known as “Pope’s Glass”.
I wish all of our soldiers a safe return home.
