Not inspiring much confidence there, gentlemen.

Quickie CPR Course Just as Good as the Longer Version

CPR is a vital first aid technique that everyone should know. But few people sign up for CPR classes because they take 3 to 4 hours to complete. No longer: experts have developed a new, 30-minute version that is just as effective. To watch CPR videos and learn about classes offered near you, click here. Some places even offer comedy CPR courses!

bones

Oh, hurrah, hurrah!

Q: What Living Tissues Are Part of the Endocrine System?

A: Your bones! Scientists have discovered that our bones may play a role in regulating metabolism and blood sugar. A hormone called osteocalcin not only regulates mineralization but also appears to regulate adipose deposits (the spare tire), insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism, and pancreatic function. Many of us think of bones as being little more than inert calcium sticks, but your osseous material is living tissue that plays an important role in your overall health. To give your bones some much-needed love, aim for resistance training and weight-bearing activity two or three times a week.

Hole-in-the-Heart Self Repair Patch!

Scientists have invented a bioabsorbable patch that encourages the heart to heal itself within about 30 days. Patent foramen ovale (”hole in the heart”) is a heart defect that is linked to strokes and migraines. Previously, invasive surgery was required to treat PFO. Want to see how the patch is fitted? That photo slaughtered me.

Bones help regulate insulin? So might bone marrow be used in treating diabetes?

  2. Just LOVE that photo!

And yes, inert calcium sticks–if I thought about it at all, that’s what I thought bones were! (I should not be legally allowed to have a health blog, btw). Guess there’s no excuse for skipping the gym, then.

    Great collection of stuff, thanks!

Hmmm… I think the fireman pressed Annie’s chest too hard…

That heart thing is very cool…

  4. Ross James says:

Who would have thought of maintaining bone health? Not me, but now I will. Thanks.

  5. Sara says:

Thanks for the comments, everyone! (Ross: glad you’ve learned somethin’ new! FYI, walking and hiking are both great weight-bearing workouts.)

Crabby, you have pictures of cupcakes on your blog. I don’t think anyone is expecting you to be the definitive resource for all things health. Keep doing your thing! ;)
