I find that when I have localised pain in a part of my body, a hot water bottle (the rubber ones) always help! Having a sore hand or foot, you can kind of move along and work around, but when your back or neck hurts--yow. I love (not really) that sort of robotic quality I develop when my neck is having problems: can't turn my head to look at you, so here, let me carefully turn my entire body so as not to jar anything! I think exercise helps keep things working smoothly...that's if I don't move wrong and throw things out of whack. A delicate balance, clearly.
