Easy health Tip #12: Cut Prep

I used to work for a deli and every morning we would have a shift dedicated to “cutting prep”. It was basically preparing (ah!) all the raw food materials for consumption for the day. Lettuce heads would be shredded, 40 lb. blocks of cheese would be sliced, etc.
You see if someone had had to shave a slice of sharp cheddar of that huge sumbitch every time someone ordered a sandwich, well no one would’ve eaten there. They would have left and eaten somewhere else while the new guy was figuring out how to un-break a 2 foot cheese wire.
This tactic usually applies in the home, too. At least it does when you’re as lazy as I am…
If I break down and snack, I usually end up going for the worst: something prepackaged and ready to eat. There are a few things that suck about this. Pre-packaged items are almost always more costly than raw goods, and most of them are processed which means they more than likely contain saturated fats and lots of preservatives. This is like pouring 43 octane gas into your car.
If you had something prepared though, there might be a different ending to the war of the wills out on the linoleoum. So, invest in some solid tupperware, and pick a prep day, such as Sunday, when you do all your grocery shopping.
When you go to the grocery store set aside about an hour afterward and chop up all your fruits and veggies for the week (since you read this article and actually bought some this time) as well as any other small items that you didn’t purchase ready to eat, but you know you’ll want in a ready to eat condition later.
For example: I really love oranges. I REALLY hate to peal them, which leaves me eating microwave popcorn (yes I’m that lazy.) So if you get all of that our of the way and have a plastic container in your fridge full of wedges, popping the top isn’t nearly as much work as gogin through the steps to make micrwave popcorn, plus you don’t have to wait and you’ll save cash by doing a little of the manual labor yourself.
Go forth and chop stuff! (All at once instead of every time you’re hungry, this is also a great time saver for cooking meals, and clean-up.)
