A University of Rhode Island study has shown slow eating can help you lose weight. Basically, it leaves you physically satisfied longer and makes a meal more enjoyable. The study considered chewing a mouthful between 15 and 20 times “eating slowly”.
30 college-aged women had plates of pasta and were told to go ahead an get down how they normally do. When they were asked to eat quickly, they consumed 646 calories over the course of 9 minutes. But then they were told to slow down, and chew the food 15 to 20 times. Their calorie intake dropped to 579 calories in 29 minutes. Not bad for a simple mechanical change.
