Healthbolt

Everything you always wanted to know about…Poo!

Here’s something that you might never have thought you needed – a field guide to your bowel motions. Yes, really. And you can pick up your very own copy of this handy little brown book over at Amazon.com or almost any bookstore.

No joke. This book is turning into something of a bestseller. Chronicle Books originally printed 20,000 copies of What’s Your Poo Telling You to be sold at Urban Outfitters as a novelty book – the kind you’d give as a joke present. But that wasn’t anywhere near enough copies. More had to be printed and over 225,000 copies have now been sold, mostly by the chain bookstores.

Poo, it seems, has come out the toilet and into the bookcase.

So why would you want or need such a field guide? Here’s a hint. It has to do with our obsession over health. Western society is so focused on eating healthy that it’s quite natural to go from worrying about what’s going into our mouths to worrying about what’s coming out the other end.

Dry reading you think? Not according to a recent Salon.com article The Bowel Movement. Here’s what they have to say about the book…

“Reading Richman and Sheth’s book is similar to pulling an enormous ball of wax out of your ear. Although you know you should be disgusted, you can’t stop looking at and obsessing over it. Quite simply, theirs is a fascinating read. (”Two thumbs up! Gripping and loaded!”) You feel relieved to get to the bottom of so many rectal mysteries, to find out that certain bathroom experiences — sometimes seemingly weird and extraordinary — are not signs that you’re a freak of nature.”

Chronicle Books are running with this theme. You can not only get the book What’s Your Poo Telling You? but soon you’ll have the chance to get the What’s Your Poo Telling You? 2009 Diary Calender and the Poo Log: A Record Keeper.

And if all that isn’t enough, you can also visit the author’s Dr. Stool site where you can read an excerpt of the book and even Ask Dr Stool a question or two.

So what do you think?

Will this book end up in your bookcase?

I go to the john once a day to poo. I notice my dog that each time it takes a meal, it poos. Are we different?

  2. Liz says:

Hey DOM, I think that animals have a much faster metabolism than us humans – so everything in goes out quicker….

  3. Charazard says:

Once upon a time, quite a few summers ago, my friend and I were eating more than 20 popsicles a day (I ALWAYS ate blue ones). Anywho, I ended up pooping BLUE!!!! Is this how poop always works? And if so, you should probably conduct an experiment as proof…
