Hello Readers of HealthBolt.net!

Connie's Journey
I’m thrilled to join you today and tomorrow as part of my SUGAR SHOCK! Blog Tour. I’m Connie and I’m your friendly “Ex-Sugar Shrew!” “Huh?” you might be wondering.Yeah, you got it — back in 1998, I used to be one sugar-addicted chick! But now that I’ve risen above my days of clamoring day and night (OK, not all hours, but many) for Larry Licorice, Henry Hard Candies, and Chuck Chocolate, I now get to spread the sour scoop about sweets.Before you begin to even ponder sugar’s many dangers, begin by laughing at Connie, the Sugar Shrew of 1998. Yeah, I give you permission! To get going — just check out my silly cartoons on my website at http://www.sugarshock.com/cartoons.shtml where I playfully poke fun of myself….Phew!! Thank goodness my sugar-focused days are long, long behind me, and now I’m really thrilled, because in my sugar-free state, I was able to concentrate enough to research and write my engaging, easy-to-read, compelling (at least I hope!) book SUGAR SHOCK!, which was quite recently released by Berkley Books. (Drum roll here, please! You can find SUGAR SHOCK! at bookstores nationwide, on online retailers such as Amazon.com, BarnesAndNoble.com, WalMart.com, Powells.com and at your local libraries.)

By the way, I’m really pleased to tell you that my book has snagged the attention and endorsements of many, many heavy-hitting health experts such as Dr. Mehmet Oz (you know, author of the mega-bestseller YOU: On A Diet). You can read some book buzz here at http://www.sugarshock.com/endorsements.html

So, now that you know I’m a legitimate journalist and bona fide, laughter-loving ex-sugar addict, let’s get going!

I’d like to begin by asking you. Are you besieged, as I once was, by any of the following strange, baffling symptoms:

  • Mood swings
  • Ferocious headaches
  • “Brain fog” or what I playfully call “Impaired Concentration Syndrome”
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Scary Heart palpitations (where you feel like your ticker is ready to jump right out of your chest!)
  • Severe PMS
  • Excessive exhaustion (sleep doesn’t seem to cut it!)
  • Crying spells
  • Aching eyeballs
  • Dizziness
  • And those persistent, annoying sugar cravings. (What pests!)

Believe it or not, as I humorously reveal (I like to think) in Chapter 1 of SUGAR SHOCK!, I was beset by 44 ailments — all symptoms of hypoglycemia.) So…

  • Do ANY of the above symptoms hit you soon after you eat sugary foods or refined carbs?
  • How long do they last?
  • Do you have horrible sugar cravings that you go to great lengths to satisfy?

Please share your torrid tales! Don’t fret; I promise — I won’t laugh at you. Just check out Chapter 1 of my book in which I really reveal the sugar skeletons from my closet!

    I have many of these symptoms, but I never considered they’d be occuring because of sugar. I will keep an eye on it and see if they happen after I eat something sugary. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Aragornrain, I know what you mean. It’s pretty hard to believe that eating those innocent-looking sweets and refined carbs (or what I call “culprit carbs”) could trigger a host of mystifying symptoms. By the way, what symptoms are you experiencing? Connie

    Does Connie have any comments/information about the growing number of pet ailments treated by designer drugs (anxiety/depression) and the possible link to all of the ground corn (sugar!) they’ve been fed over the past 100 years?

    Miss Kitty, you raise a very interesting point! I didn’t specifically do research on pets and diseases for my book SUGAR SHOCK!, but I sure suspect that there’s a connection between the corn these dogs and cats are eating and the ailments they get such as diabetes. We’re certainly seeing that with humans so it makes sense for cats and dogs to be affected similarly. In fact, I recently had chats with two different people, who had pets with diabetes. Scary!

    Hi Connie,

    The symptoms I have are:
    * Mood swings
    * Ferocious headaches
    * Anxiety
    * Depression
    * Heart palpitations
    * Crying spells
    * And those persistent, annoying sugar cravings! :)

    I know that some of it doesn’t have to do with sugar (I’ve seen a doctor about the heart palpitations and anxiety/depression) but I wonder if sugar could be adding to it.

    Aragornrain,

    Well, those are some annoying symptoms! I’d certainly see a smart doctor and check this out. He may choose to give you a 5-hour Glucose Tolerance Test. Also, it sure sounds like a good idea to watch your sugar habit, too! You can learn more about hypoglycemia and sugar issues in my book SUGAR SHOCK!, which is available at bookstores and online retailers everywhere. I also have a whole section helping people to break free from their sugar issues. All the best to you!
