How to Find the Best Hospital in Your Town

A good friend of mine who (who happened to be a 5-star chef) once told me, “If you ever walk into a sushi bar and you don’t see any Asian customers, turn around and walk back out.” You know why? Because they know their own culture. Making sushi isn’t like cooking a steak. It’s an art form, a way of life, a cultural experience. I’m not going to try and pigeon-hole all Asians as knowing everything about sushi, but they do know their own culture.

Who else knows their own culture? Nurses.

Think about any job you’ve ever worked at. The business you worked for was it’s own culture, and furthermore, a subset of a larger culture of its industry. A hospital is no different. Every hospital has its own slang terms, its own good guys and bad guys and its own version of a merit system. The nurses are on the front lines of this. They aren’t insulated from the ins and outs of the hospital like the administration. And they talk to other nurses, and more importantly they talk to patients. I guarantee they know which hospital in town they’d take their kids to. Why don’t you ask them?

If you don’t have access to a nurse, ask the next EMT you see. They’re easily recognizable and usually happy to help a stranger (they don’t put on that uniform every morning because the pay and hours are so good).

So, do you want to walk into a hospital a nurse wouldn’t take their family to?
