How to Make Your Sucky Job a Little Less Sucky

Hate your job? Daydream of ways to have your boss abducted and shipped off to Switzerland? Join the masses.

If the thought of burning yourself with scalding coffee sounds more appealing than heading to work another day, try these tips, which have been proven by researchers at Texas State University to increase job satisfaction:

  • Sit by a window as often as possible.
  • Add a green plant to your work area.

Yep, that’s it. And according to the TU study, out of 450 workers who utilized those two tips, 85% reported themselves to be “content” or “very happy” at work, as opposed to only 58% of those who did not have a window or plant nearby.

Of course, if your workstation is far removed from a window, you may be out of luck. Try taking a walk during your lunch hour or escaping to a conference room with a view, if possible.

So do you have any tips for increasing your feelings of well-being on the job? Let us know…

those researchers didn’t think of Cubicle Land in their research.

There is no windows in my building or work floor, and there is no running water or air to support life.

I interviewed once at a large company in Silicon Valley. The interviewer warned me that the CEO insisted that no one be allowed to have any plants on their desks. Also, no one was allowed any photos or knick knacks to be displayed in their area. He believed that doing this made people ‘more effective.’
Last I checked, that company is not doing very well at all.

I think perhaps changing your job, and acquiring a better boss will help as well. But only after you’ve tried to find a resolution to the problems you face in the workplace… I’d rather take the bull by the horns. Though no harm planting trees and sitting by a window, it doesn’t seem to be a solution to a “Sucky job” or a sucky workplace.
