CDC says Morgellons is a mystery disease worth investigating.

Imagine strange fibers and other inorganic materials growing out of sores on your skin and feeling like bugs are crawling around under your skin. It’s the type of images that you’d expect from science fiction and horror movies. But it’s a real and frightening disease with an increasing incidence around the world.

It sure doesn’t sound pleasant.

No one knows how many people suffer from this disease but many of those who have gone public with it have said that they were often given wrong or dismissive diagnoses. Many doctors, thinking the problem is a form of delusional parasitosis whereby people believe they are infected with parasites, often refer those suffering from Morgellons disease to a psychiatrist.

It took the research of Mary Leitao, a biologist whose son was suffering from a strange sore on his lip that wouldn’t heal and the feeling of bugs underneath it to investigate the problem further. What she saw, looking through a microscope, was “…were bundles of fibers, balls of fibers…red and blue.’ which glowed under ultraviolet light.

But when Leitao took this research to a doctor at a leading hospital, he ignored her discover and advised her pediatrician that the son simply needed vaseline for the lip sore and the mother needed a psychiatric evaluation.

Leitao has since established the Morgellons Research Foundation to provide support, advocacy, and information for those suffering from the disease and for those interested in learning more.

Today, the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced they are launching a study to investigate a mystery disease known as Morgellons.

The study, in conjunction with Kaiser Permanente, will take place in northern California where many of the reported cases of Morgellons are located. Study participants will be given blood tests, skin examinations, and psychological evaluations to help determine the cause of this mysterious disease.

You can watch ABC “Nightline” at 11:35 p.m. ET tonight and “Good Morning America” Thursday at 7 a.m to learn more about the disease and the CDC study.

  1. Morgellons suffer 4 yrs. The medical people have left all of us to our ways of finding a cure. Thank God,they are finally investegating this. It has been reported all over the world. My heart breaks for the children who can’t speak of how much pain they have. Please, continue to give this the good old american try. We wait in pain 24/7, for results.

  2. Ron Hamby says:

    Heres an article dated 11/16/06

Exposure to GM foods linked to Morgellons disease
Researchers at the State University of New York….. believe exposure to GM foods may be causing new cases of Morgellons disease,
    reports Metro

  3. Liz says:

Sylvia, thanks for stopping by and commenting. I hadn’t heard about Morgellons before today. It sounds like a very painful and frustrating disease and I sure hope that this new study finds out what causes it and how to treat it…

  4. Liz says:

Ron, would be interesting to read the article you’ve referenced. Do you have a internet URL for it…where can we find it…

  5. Ron Hamby says:

Liz, The website i found it on was: http://www.4.dr-rathfoundition.org under news link, than other news link, but its not their anymore, but i did save it on my computer. I can email you the news articule. contact me at rhstar@hotmail.com with an email address and i’ll send it to you.

  6. Liberty says:

I heard about this disease about a year ago, and while I feel for Sylvia and any others suffering with it, I find it remarkably fascinating. How the human body can misfire and malfunction to such extremes is mind-boggling.

Hope to hear more about this…hopefully with some positive news for sufferers.

  7. Ron Hamby says:

Liz, a news release that preceeded the article i emailed you on the possible link of GMO to Morgellons disease is at: http://www.cherokeechas.com, (A source for Morgellon disease.) Click on research and than click on more about Dr. citousky.

  8. Liz says:

Hi Ron, thanks for that - will check it out.

Got your email with the articles but haven’t had chance to read them yet…hopefully later in week will be able to find some reading time.

  9. Honey says:

I’ve had this crap since ‘98,it’s progressed over the years, from bumps that itched to larval thingys to translucent, pale blue strings that actually sway & grab hold of each other(not static).I’ve got purple scars & lesions that don’t heal. Yeah,it’s all in my head, right!
It’s about time this disease or whatever it is has been brought out into the light. Many thanks to the Senators, doctors, folks who’ve pressed on to get this ball rolling!

  10. Liberty says:

Wow, thanks for sharing your experience Honey. It’s just baffling to me how a condition with so many physical properties could be deemed as in one’s head.

I hope you get some of the answers you seek soon.

  11. Liz says:

I’m with Liberty on this - all those physical symtpoms and some people still think the disease is all in a persons head. Hopefully, the CDC study will set things straight.

Honey, thanks to sharing. Keep strong. And we’ll keep our fingers crossed that more is discovered and learned about this disease and that cure and relief will be on the way.

  12. Ron Hamby says:

Yea, I agree Liz……. but wheels of the CDC turn slowly unless this disease turns epidemic and life threatening. Even if they evidently nail the cause down and Big Pharma comes up with the magic pill, your probably looking at several years, even at that. I think the cure is under our noses, and starts with total cleansing of the upper and lower GI tract and a total change in diet, of coarse under the directions of a professional. A start could be with a Certified Colon Therapist. I venture to say, what comes out internally, might empty the room!

  13. Liz says:

Hey Ron, good point about speed of things getting done…

as for colon therapy…interesting idea as a cure…any studies done on this in relation to morgellons??

  14. Ron Hamby says:

    Hi Liz,
I do not think theres any one cause of Morgellion disease, but since it’s a parasite- like disease and a lot of the symptions can be traced directly to the Gastvointestinal system, thats a good place to start So, because of diets consisting of fast foods, packaged foods containing preservatives, dyes, MSG and GMO as well to many carbs and sugars, (which parasites feed on), you have the breeding ground for viruses, fungus/mold that leads to candida. Also heavy metals, can be a factor. 95% of diseases start here.
We look at GMO foods as possibably a contributory factor because 70% of processed and packaged foods on market shelves are said to contain traces of Gmo. According to Byron Richard, in his book, Fight For your Health, the odds are high that humans will face super-strains of viruses which develop their new powers from interacting with GMO foods. The digestive tract runs a definite risk of imbalance from GMO: GMO food may act as a toxic antibiotic to friendly bacteria, or it may genetically interact with existing digestive bacteria to create nasty infections.
A good source for info on detox and changing diatery habits to eliminate disease is Kevin Gianni’s( Google him) website where you can listen live to experts from all over the world and ask questions on his scheduled podcasts. Another good source is http://www.newstagert.com ( Mike Adams,The health Ranger.)

  15. Liz says:

Ron, thanks for the info and the resources.

    Great idea Ann.

    Thanks for the link.

  18. Cj says:

Man…i dont know where to start, or maybe i can start in 02 when i self diagnosed myself with this horrible disease. After going to kaiser in northern cali they told me the same thing as everyone else. They said i was delusion, but i thought i had lice, so i kept thinking for years i had lice or scabies using the treatments once a week, because i was homeless living in my car i thought the lice was coming from my car seats but it wastnt, after i gave up on hospitals i decided to research on my own, and what i found was shocking. I found testimonies from people who sound like they had symptoms like me, but what i did next is what makes a difference now. i stil have it but its not as bad. What i did for the itching and my skin is put tea tree oil in my lotion and use that all over my body and as far as the biting and stinging i used nutra silver the same stuff i heard bout some lady trying, so i used it starting 07 and right now in 08 it calmd down dramatically i barely feel it.

  19. Liz says:

sounds like you’ve had a pretty rough time. hope things are getting better. sounds like you’ve got the disease under control at the moment.

thanks for sharing with us. all the best

  20. Ron Hamby says:

I think that to really “unload” morgellons disease once and for all, you have to due a through, internal cleanse and due it on a regular bases. Of course this is the way to elimate, not only morgellons, but all other diseases for a starter.

  21. I have searched and read and read and searched for 4 years now, thousands of hours. Til I almost drove myself nutz, haha. No? ok.
Well, in the beginning I noticed a lot of different groups had topics that seem to all lead to my question, What is it?
All of our question. The problem was that these different hypothesis didn’t seem to want to relate to each other, though it was apparent the underlying issue was all the same. Once I was asked, “If queen for a day, what would be your wish?” Reply, “That everyone trying to solve this problem were all in the same room.” The time and energy (not to mention funds) used toward the research could be directed more specifically if properly organized. Some theories being presented as ‘current’ by one group was information released by another, A YEAR AGO !

  22. detoxy says:

so i guess we should stay away from GM foods.

  23. acne-care> says:

the long term safety of GM foods are not well established.

  24. ItalianMomma says:

I think I have this Morgellons Disease. The difference is I have had it since I was about 8 years old. I am now 34 yrs old. It is progressively getting worse. I have good days and Bad ones too. When it is really hot outside the sores seem to tighten up and get worse. I have dark scars that have a tendency of reopening up and sores that don’t heal for months on end. Does anyone have any ideas on how to settle the swelling and soreness down?

  25. My nephew also acquired this at an early age, now 18. I didn’t know until last year. He gave up on trying to explain to his father, a nurse practitioner who says “D.O.P” (idiot).
They do not get better until the fibers or substance(varies) come out. Until that happens, I have descent results with generic formula Calamine lotion, only the generic works. Band-aids help a lot too, not the fiber-made ones. Try different products and note what works best for you, I have a lot of allergies. Different works for different. Good Luck.

  26. Morgellons topic is being discussed on Dr. Phil Today, Monday.

    http://www.squidoo.com/fiberdisease

  27. Ron Hamby says:

There is a Dr. Mitchell Fleisher thats vary good at treating diseases and and offers on the phone,
consultations at 434-361-1896. His website is at
    http://www.alternativedrmcare.com. for anyone whos interested.

  28. ItalianMomma says:

I don’t know if anyone with Morgellons Disease is interested but I did find one medication that does help with the pain and irritation. If you use the spray Bactine it helps with the infection and reduces the swelling and itching a bit. I use it constantly and soak down my leg with the spray. If it runs down my leg then so be it. Within mins I don’t feel the tightness of the fibers anymore. and the pain subsides. If you do get the spray make sure i is Maximum Strength Bactine! And always but at least 2. One for at home and on for Travel.

  29. Celestea says:

I have what may be Morgellon’s. The sores, the fibers, intense itching. I started drinking a capful of apple cider vinegar in a 12 oz. glass of water twice a day. I also pour a cup of apple cider vinegar in my bath water. I get the water as hot as I am comfortable in and soak for 30 minutes. The sores dry up ,they don’t go away and the itching is not as bad. I hope this offers relief to some one else.
The show on Dr. Phil was not as informative as it could have been. He used to be better at that type of stuff, now he’s like reading the grocery store rags.

  30. Kristi says:

I really, really think that Morgellon’s is a bio-engineered virus and that some people in the government know what they created.

  31. perriann says:

i live in ny and started getting symptoms just llike mogellons 3years ago. You would not believe how i have been treated by doctors, health depts. emergency rooms and family. The cdc is doing a study which will not be worth anything. This disease definately makes people very ill and no tests that anyone or i have done for 3 years shows anything. How is the cdc doing these same tests gonna prove anything. test are needed to be made to show something if the whole worlds tests already done show nothing then how are the same gonna change the results? lets be honest us government please. we need to really do something. i believe they are gonna end up saying a run aroung of reteric like they have been and never be conclusive about this. they will probubly disprove it less costly.

  32. Russ says:

At the beginning of 2008, I too was diagnosed with delusion of parasites. Later I found I had all the symptoms of Morgellons. Later I found a website with the possible connection with GMO foods. By eliminating all GMO foods, the Morgellons would go dormant and the symptoms would disappear. Only the scars remained.

For the last decade I have had type 2 diabetis. By avoiding GMO foods, I no longer have diabetis and no longer take any diabetis medication. Also, I no longer take 300 mg a day of atenolol for high blood pressure. I do feel a better except when I, by accident, eat an unlabeled GMO food and the Morgellon symptoms return.

I believe that Morgellons is caused by a genetically modified fungus that came with a genetically modified food. I believe that GMO foods deteriorate the body so the fungus can feed. I stay away from corn tacos, corn chips, corn syrup and corn oil. I can eat JOLLY TIME pop corn with butter and salt because Jolly Time will only buy natural corn. [not GMO]

We also buy natural peanut butter made from peanuts [and a little salt], Brayer’s Ice Cream with no sugar added [blue rim], and we look for bread without corn syrup added. We have switched to cooking with olive oil. You have to read the ingredients before you buy any food. You have to assume all corn, soy, canola and cotton seed is GMO unless the food is ‘organtic’, or you call the manufacturer and they say they do not use GMO food. Note that ’sugar’ may be from GMO corn. You have to ask.
