Listening to Beethoven Eases Depression

But listening to Ja Rule cures it. No, no. Iranian researchers who treated depressed patients with sonatas saw measurable improvement in their patients.

Hypnosis an Effective Surgery Tool

Women who underwent hypnosis before their breast cancer surgeries experienced less pain, nausea, drug use, and emotional trauma than women who met with a therapist before their surgeries. Apparently, hypnosis is incredibly effective for addressing many health issues – and there are the studies to back it up. Did you know that? I didn’t know that. The problem is that hypnosis has the Woo factor.

Curvy Women Are Smarter

And that’s why men like them better! A new study finds that women with a more hourglass waist-to-hip ratio are more intelligent. The (unlikely) theory: fat in the hips is rich in Omega-3’s, which is good for the brain. Another possibility: dumb teen girls have thin, stupid children. The “ideal” waist-to-hip ratio is between .6 and .7. Translation: if you look like a brick, you’re dumb as a brick. It’s a tough day for bricks and beanpoles alike, so in other words it just generally sucks to be a woman. Scientists report that thin women are prone to osteoporosis. (via Slate)

“…fat in the hips is rich in Omega-3’s, which is good for the brain”

this has got to be the stupidest thing i have ever heard (well, no, this is: “The human race will one day split into two separate species, an attractive, intelligent ruling elite and an underclass of dim-witted, ugly goblin-like creatures, according to a top scientist.” you can google the quotation to find the hilarious story…but it’;s close!). i’m an archaeologist, so i’ve heard some crazy theories’, but this is truly desperate. it’s the kind of ‘explanation’ that causes me to reject, out of hand, about 99% of the ’studies’ i hear about in the media. out of sheer princible i just flat out reject them as stupid. what happens to these doctors’ brains when they get outa med school? or is dong stupid stuff like trying to correlate physical attributes with stuff like intelligence (whatever it is) part of med school? well anyway this is totally stupid. it gives me pleasure to reject it outright likd most studies i hear in the media. cheers cameron’ p.s. hey, i’m a regular reader now! your stories are interesting and funny.

p.s. yes i know i had typos, so sue me! i write for a living and stick to the rules there, on blogs and such i don’t give a damn! :0

    Hi Cameron,

Great comments. I think the Omega-3/hip/brain connection is certainly far-fetched. About as good as the study out this week that said women don’t sashay their hips as exaggeratedly at certain points in their cycle because they don’t want to attract men who could get them pregnant. Or something like that. :)

Hey, does that mean there’s something wrong with me for crying when I listen to Moonlight Sonata!?
    :-o
