The push-up: it’s said to be a great indicator of good health since it uses many major muscle groups. It’s also the do-anywhere exercise that requires nothing other than your own body weight. That said, push-ups should be the go-to exercise for the whole human race, right?

Yet for many people, they’re so darn hard to do.

According to a recent NYT article, the average 40-year-old woman should be able to perform 16 push-ups, and the average man of the same age should be able to do 27.

So we want to know…

How many push-ups can you do?

No wonder this site got BoingBoing coverage last week: http://hundredpushups.com/

  2. Kat Tancock says:

I can do 27 – but that’s double what I could do before I started climbing regularly last fall. Working toward 50! (100 seems like a very lofty goal.)

  3. A'Llyn says:

    I’m gonna say…um…maybe three.

I know I need to work on that.

  4. Stobrawa says:

About 50. Maybe I should start keeping track and shoot for 100. I’ll update this comments section if I make it.

  5. Nora says:

Maybe 15 before my tendinitis starts complaining :)

  6. Ross says:

6… it hurts to even type that! :-(

  7. dragonmamma/naomi w. says:

No guessing here–I just dropped down and gave you 20!

When warmed-up, on a good day, I can do 100. But I don’t enjoy it.

  8. Cathy in Seattle says:

How much time do I get in between push-ups and can I just do push-offs instead?

  9. Liz says:

Remind me again – what are push ups????

  10. Yasser says:

About 50ish. And I recently joined the 100 push up challenge. Recommend it to everyone.

  11. I can do 40, but I have to use pushup bars – well, actually I use a pair of ten lb dumbbells, but it’s the same idea: keeps the wrists straight (I’m 60 and have some arthritis in my wrists and just can’t do them with palms flat).

So is it harder or easier with wrists straight (not like I have a real choice)?

  12. H Khan says:

I’m 15 years old, I’m 5′3″ and I can do 50-60, which i do once when i wake up and once when I go to sleep

  13. wyatt from pennsylvainia says:

  14. wyatt from pennsylvainia says:

  15. D-Wade says:

I can do 70 push-ups regularly, but my highest in one shot is 80. This time last year i couldn’t even do 1. lol

  16. Ema says:

I can do 69 in one shot non stop but can’t go more then that must train harder to push it to the next level. Max was 70. can do 50-60 Easy.
Once i can do 80 i will stop and learn 1 Handed.
    Maxed with 1 hand.

  17. matt says:

im just turning 15 and i did 50, with a few short breaks inbetween. How many should i do before it really shows?

  18. chris says:

I’m 27. I do a push up work out 3 days a week. I do 30 sets of 25 push ups in 30 minutes. It ends up being 750 total. It’s a great cardio work out as well as strength builder. Hopefully in a few months I will be up to 30 in 30 minutes. That would be 900.

  19. gup says:

i done 106 in 2 minutes at school im 15
