Well, turns out there’s an easier way to get your kids to eat their greens, yellows, and oranges.
Just give them a cool name like ‘X-ray Vision Carrots’, ‘Tomato Bursts’, or ‘dinosaur broccoli trees’ and the vegetables won’t stand a chance. They’ll be goobled up quick.

They’ll do just about anything to avoid that green, orange, or yellow thing sitting on the plate. Hiding it doesn’t work. Somehow, they always seem to know it there.

That’s the finding of a new study by Cornell University researchers. They presented 186 four-year old “X-ray Vision Carrots” and found that these pre-schoolers ate nearly twice as much as they did on the lunch days when they were simply labeled as ‘carrots’.

As researcher Brian Wansick says “Cool names can make for cool foods”. And the best of this is that once the kids started eating the carrots, they continued to eat them even on days when they were no longer labelled ‘X-ray Vision Carrots’.

Such a simple idea with great results. But I think that many mothers already knew this.

But the interesting thing is that doesn’t just work on kids. Adults too have an affinity for cool food names. For example, changing the name of seafood filet to ‘Succulent Italian Seafood Filet’ on a restaurant menu resulted in sales increased by 28% and taste rating increased by 12%.

Maybe it’s all in our mind.

When it comes to holidays, many of our usual routines get mislaid as we rush around, shopping, partying, visiting, traveling, and generally try to fit way too much in way too little time.

One of the first things to go, besides the exercise, is healthy eating habits. We overindulge in all our favorite, but not necessarily, healthy foods.

As a result, we have lots of fun and good times. But we can also end up gaining extra weight that tends to stick around, even when the holidays are over.

But not to worry, help is at hand. Kaiser Permanente has put together some tips to help skip the weight gain while celebrating the season…

Don’t skip meals or eat very little most of the day to save up so that you can eat more at a party or dinner. Eat at your regular times, with perhaps a little lower fat or smaller portions in general. If your meal will be later than usual, have a snack to curb your appetite so that you are not too hungry when you get there.

Don’t stand near the buffet table. Take what you like and move away from the table.

Make the season one of sharing. If you are given sweets or other special foods, then share them with family, coworkers, or various groups with which you will be meeting.

Limit the alcohol. It stimulates the appetite and contributes extra calories.

Choose the foods you really like and pass on the ones that you don’t like as much.

Check your place on the hunger scale: on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 is very hungry and 10 is very full. If you reach a 7 or so, then stop eating. You don’t need any more.

Plan ahead. If you are going to a family dinner where you know most of what will be served, think about what you will eat. And plan ahead how to politely but firmly decline seconds from an insistent host or hostess.

If you overindulge at a holiday gathering, don’t just decide that you have blown it and that you won’t try to adhere to healthy diet guidelines until January 1. An occasional lapse does not cause excessive weight gain or prolonged elevated blood glucose levels, but several weeks of excessive eating may. Instead, use the event as an opportunity to learn and to plan better for the next time.

Continue regular exercise or start exercising regularly. The exercise will help control your blood glucose and your weight. And, you will probably feel better.

Focus on the people and the fellowship, not the food.

Try to eat slowly and possibly on a smaller plate. Focus on weight management versus weight loss for the holiday season. Weight loss is difficult enough to achieve the rest of the year and will be especially hard during the holidays.

If you are already thinking ahead about making New Year Resolutions about weight loss, an effective tool to use while trying to lose or maintain is keeping a food diary, a Kaiser Permanente study found. “The more food records people kept, the more weight they lost,” said lead author Jack Hollis Ph.D., a researcher at Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Health Research in Portland, Ore. “Those who kept daily food records lost twice as much weight as those who kept no records. It seems that the simple act of writing down what you eat encourages people to consume fewer calories.”

Sounds like pretty good advice. Of course, advice is one thing. Sticking to it is another.

In a lot of homes, eggs are those things you buy because you feel like you’re supposed to, but then after weeks of neglect, find themselves in the bottom of your trash barrel. You may have meant well, but meaning well doesn’t cook those puppies into omelets, now does it?

Well today, we’re here to encourage you to buy that carton of eggs, crack those babies open and scramble, fry, poach or boil away. And why? Eggs are packed with a B vitamin called folic acid. Many people recognize folic acid as the pre-conception wonder supplement which helps prevent neural tube abnormalities in a developing fetus. But folic acid is also a mood-elevating nutrient. In fact, adding folic acid to your diet can diminish bad moods, depression, anger, anxiety and fatigue. All in a day’s work for an egg.

Not a big fan of the oval wonders? You can get the same benefits from folic acid-friendly foods such as peas, lentils, papaya, chickpeas, and dark leafy greens. Enjoy!

Concerned about your growing weight? Then maybe it’s time to do the hara hachi bu. Practiced by the Okinawan people for generations, it simply means ‘to eat until you are 80% full’.

Now, Okinawa has one of the healthiest and longest living populations in the world, so there must be something to this.

Let’s face it, eating less is not a practice done in most Western societies. We are given plates piled high with food and then expected to empty them. I don’t know about you, but as a child I wasn’t allowed to leave the dinner table until the plate was wiped clean. And how many of you got the old ‘don’t waste the food on your plate when there are people out there starving’ speech.

Our parents meant well, but it turns out that eating less is better, especially if the less you are eating is healthier foods. The Okinawan’s not only do the hara hachi bu but also eat a antioxident rich plant-based diet. So they are winning on all accounts.

Michael Pollan, author of a new book In Defense of Food, is all in favor of this way of eating. He argues that what we are eating these days is not really food (he calls it edible foodlike substances) and how we are eating it – alone in the car or in front of the television – is not really eating.

Instead, he suggests that we should follow three simple rules – Eat Food. Not Too Much. Mostly Plants. Sounds a lot like the Okinawan way of life.

Want to know more?

Check out my guest post over at Eating Fabulously to learn how Michael Pollan suggests we do this…
