It’s Healthbolt Carnival time again and it looks like a carnival mostly about nutrition and diet, with a few extras thrown in….

The Writer’s Coin tells us he recently registered for his first race in I Am Running an Urbanathlon, saying, ” It’s a ten-mile race with an obstacle course thrown in. Now I’m motivated to get in shape for it! Video of highlights included — it looks like it’ll be a blast!”

Sajid Surve from Brain Blogger asks Why Your City Planner Is Making You Fat saying “If we as Americans do one thing well, it’s gaining weight. The average United States household now spends roughly 8 hours a day with the television on. That being said, what if there was more to the story?”

ChristianPF from Christian Personal Finance Blog tells us How to make natural toothpaste finding it ‘cheap and easy to make your own!!’

MSC from Hypnosis Network Blog looks at A New Reason Why It is Harder NOT to Overeat as We Age, saying, “Discusses how free radicals may make it harder for us to stop eating.”

NAOMI from Diary From England looks at how BROCCOLI FIGHTS PROSTATE CANCER.

And Randy Powell from Eating-Veggies.com: Alkaline Diet blog looks at Turmeric: Miracle superfood?.

Joel Gray of Health Tips 101, meanwhile, reports Herbal Cancer Treatments A Boost To Your Cancer Fighting System.

Stephen from Balanced Existence suggests The Best Diet for You, saying, “There are thousands upon thousands of books on the subject of diet. Browse through the internet and there is a staggering array of conflicting advice. This plethora of information has lead to confusion and frustration for those seeking the path to physical health and wellbeing. To make matters worse it has been shown that those who diet and fail regain more weight then they actually lost. The effect on health of a wildly fluctuating body weight and dietary intake is not good to say the least. Can there possibly be a solution to this problem that is plaguing so many?”

Joshua Seth presents a Natural Weight Loss Lifestyle Tip saying, “Do you compare yourself to the people around you? Most people do. As obesity becomes more widespread in our society being overweight is becoming the norm.”

Eden Danielson from eDetoxify.com writes about how Oprah Completes Her 21-Day Cleanse, saying it’s not an easy thing to do and suggests you use your own judgment in order to determine if this is the right thing for you.

Anyone considering a cleansing diet might want to read Peter Murphy’s from Get Motivated Stay Motivated post about 5 Powerful Motivation Techniques that Work Like Magic first.

Meanwhile Sandra Ahten from Sandra Ahten presents The Reasonable Diet saying, “Learn How can we make healthier dieting and weight control a source of pleasure instead of duty? How can we, as Thoreau suggests, take it upon ourselves and bring happiness to this area of our lives?”

Petra Ioni from Fountia suggests that the Low Carb Diet Weight Loss Study Results Flawed?, saying, “Playing devil’s advocate to the Atkins dieters spin on this recent study.”

But it’s not all about food and diet. Lazy Man and Health provides pointers on How to Pick the Right Gym, saying, “Picking a gym is not always easy. Here are a few things to consider first.”

Grace R Young OT looks at the need for Rest, Pacing and Timing.

Dean Moyer from The Back Pain Blog looks at Microdiscectomy and Herniated Discs, saying, “The first step in any journey is to decide where you want to go. With that in mind, here is a simple overview of spinal anatomy as related to degenerative disc disease in, The First Step in Repairing Herniated Discs.”

Mike Wheeler from Brain Stimulant reports on Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, saying, “Deep TMS is a new way to non-invasively stimulate almost any area of the brain”

And Jose DeJesus MD from Physician Entrepreneur writes about Medicare Pilot Personal Health Record Program, saying, “A pilot Personal Health Record (PHR) program will be rolled out next year in Arizona and Utah for Medicare patients.”

And that’s it for this edition of the Healthbolt Carnival.

This ‘Biggest Loser’ reduced his body weight by 50% in six months through diet and exercise, so he can definitely ‘talk the talk’.

This ‘Biggest Loser’ reduced his body weight by 50% in six months through diet and exercise, so he can definitely ‘talk the talk’.

A Chicago Tribune reporter caught up with Bernie recently to discover how he manages to eat out once or twice a week and still manage to keep the weight off. After all, as every dieter knows, frequent restaurant visits can play havoc on your weight loss goals.

The trick, Bernie says, is to follow these tips…

- Pick the restaurant carefully.
- Don’t sacrifice taste. It doesn’t have to be bland or boring to be low in calories.
- Don’t feel guilty about what you do end up eating.
- Make smart decisions about what you order depending on the amount of exercise done and food consumed earlier in day.
- Don’t feel you have to eat a dish the way it is described on the menu. Ask for changes such as ‘baked’ instead of ‘fried’.
- Carry around a calorie counter to help you decide.
- If you think the meals too large, then get half of it boxed up and kept in the kitchen until you’re ready to leave.
- Order a dessert if you really want it, but do it rarely.
- Craving something sweet – order fruit, even if it’s not on the menu.
- Don’t eat out every day. Make it special.

We're mere moments from the start of a holiday weekend. A weekend full of relaxation, togetherness, and food. Of course, for most of us, the term “food” shall be used loosely to describe “meals” which consist of brats, hot dogs, burgers, assorted mayonnaise-laden salads, desserts, and maybe, maybe a slice of watermelon. Oh, and beer.

And what we really should be eating differs greatly. In fact, here’s the list, according to the New York Times, of the 11 superfoods which should be staples in our gone-awry diets. Check and see just how many you intersperse into mealtimes:

1. Beets

2. Cabbage

3. Swiss Chard

4. Cinnamon

5. Pomegranate Juice

6. Dried Plums

7. Pumpkin Seeds

8. Sardines

9. Turmeric

10. Frozen Blueberries

11. Canned Pumpkin

So…how’d you do? I have exactly 3 of those things on a regular basis, and most I never eat at all. Hmm. Peculiar. I wonder where “brownies” and “Lucky Charms” are on that list?

Anyhoo, if that’s not enough to prompt a diet overhaul, then I’m not sure what is. But…go ahead and enjoy the weekend’s naughty indulgences first. After all, we are celebrating America’s independence, right? And what’s a celebration without a cupcake or a mittfull of chips?

Exactly!

For more tips on how to incorporate these foods into your diet, read the whole story here.
