Tongue Sucker

Cool Hunting covers this nifty new gadget that is sure to save a life or two. Making it’s debut at The Royal College of Art (U.K.) Summer Show…

*drum roll*

The Tongue Sucker!

Josh Rubin says

A new essential item for the first-aid box, the Tongue Sucker literally sucks the tongue away from the windpipe to prevent suffocation when a patient is unconscious. All current designs on the market can only be used by a trained professional, but the Tongue Sucker can be used by anyone.

Inspired by the lack of such an item during the 7/7 bombings, this group of designers (Phillip Greer, Graeme Davies, Lisa Stroux, and Christopher Huntley) have won several prestigious awards for their product, which is set to become a staple of all first-aid boxes in the UK. It’s a simple, cheap and effective piece of design that will save countless lives.

Sounds like a good idea to me. They also look pretty nifty, which is more than I can say about all the other scary junk I saw in First-Aid boxes while I was working on that merit badge.

Not that design is something that’s all that important when it comes to first aid devices and actually putting them to use. But as far as getting a new technology implemented by the masses, and many times that’s the toughest part of any health related endeavor, presentation and design go a long way, so my hat is off to you, limeys.

More life-saving that sucks after the jump!
