Me, I’m a walker.

Whenever the weather’s good, I head for the beach, the park, or the forest to walk for an hour or two. I have no technique – I simply put one foot in front of the other. I thought that’s all I needed to do to get fit and healthy.

But having spent a little time reading up about ChiWalking, I’m starting to change my mind. Walking should be much more than simply one foot in front of the other.

ChiWalking is a unique program that utilizes the principles and orientation as Yoga, Pilates, and T’ai Chi to help people work with core muscles, integrate the mind and body, and focuse on overall and long term performance and well-being.

Now, I haven’t had a chance to try out the ChiWalking program but I’m seriously thinking about it.

I mentioned in the Healthbolt Holiday Gift Guide that it looked like the silly season was upon us – a time when everyone gets carried away buying presents for the nearest and dearest.

Smartex, an Italian company has been working on a project known as WEALTHY (a loose acronym for ‘wearable health care system’). Their aim is to create clever clothes that will be able to monitor your vital signs.

What they have come up with so far is a washable unitard, powered by a tiny embedded lithium battery, that can read a persons vital signs and send the information wirelessly to a computer. It’s able to provide “…information on posture and movement is measured by the stress on sensors built into the garment. Other components gauge electrical activity, yielding EKG data. Heat sensors measure temperature.” (Wired.com)

Imagine the implications. This clothing would be able to simultaneously record a number of physiological signals, allowing for greater treatment and protection of people with high risk health conditions, people in high risk environments, and elite athletes.

Sounds like a win-win proposition to me.
