Food matters. We all know that.
But do we really know how much food
matters to our health and wellbeing?
That seems to be the central question that Food Matters, a fascinating and riveting documentary, asks. This 80 minute documentary brings together the thoughts and opinions of some of the world’s leaders in nutrition and natural healing.
It argues that we live in a world of failing health care systems, where the focus is on symptoms of disease rather that the causes of disease. It’s a world where we are constantly being told that there is a ‘pill for every ill’. And along the way, somehow, the use of nutrition as a cure or preventative solution has gotten lost.
Whatever happened, the documentary asks, to the belief held by Hippocrates, father of medicine, that ‘Let Thy Food Be Thy Medicine, And Thy Medicine Be Thy Food.’
The answer, in a nutshell, seems to be that there is no money in wellness, only in ill health. As leading nutritional advocate Andrew Saul says ‘good health makes a lot of sense but not a lot of dollars’.
Food Matters is a captivating documentary that not necessarily tells us anything new but does lay out the information in a clear and concise manner.
It is a documentary designed to make us think. And then think again about what it actually means by the saying ‘you are what you eat’.
There’s discussion on raw foods, cooked foods, superfoods, and junk foods. There is also discussion on vitamins, minerals, and nutritional supplements as treatment in cancer and lifestyle diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.
An argument is made that drug research takes precedent over nutritional research. And then it looks at some of the nutritional research that has been done, not just recently but as far back as the 1940s – research that looks at the effectiveness of high doses of vitamin C in the treatment of cancer and the therapeutic value of a handful of cashews and niacin (vitamin B3) in treating depression.
The overall message of Food Matters is quite simple. Eat Well. Eat Right. And remember – you really are what you eat.
Food Matters has the ‘Healthbolt Seal of Approval’.
Anyone who has a chance should watch Food Matters. It will certainly make you think – a lot. And it should start making you question whether medicine alone is the right treatment.
