Jewelry and Beading

“Authentic Jewelry for Real Individualists” by Andreas Eberharter

Art Attack Thursday!

Andreas Eberharter shared his work with me recently, and I must say the the size and scale of his pieces are like nothing I’ve ever seen before! Unique, daring, bold…just a few of the words that come to mind. Take a look at these:

Andreas Eberharter’s approach to jewellery is a sculptural one. He searches a free accession to moulding and new materials. The pieces of jewellery are large, eye-catching, strong and clear in design. Therefore, hard and cold materials like aluminium, synthetics, Swarovski crystals or Cubic zirconia are used. Eberharter likes to work with precious metal, valuable stones or pearls.
Design without compromise – besides the shape, the haptics are essential for Andreas Eberharter. “Jewellery should not just beautify and underline certain parts of the body, it should also feel nice.” He describes it as unconventional: “You could compare it with your favourite pair of jeans. When you put them on you immediately feel comfortable. The same effect should happen to the wearer of my jewellery.”

Andreas finds inspiration in anything. Ideas appear spontaneously. The process of working itself opens new approaches. “My pieces are always hand-crafted because the best ideas occur during the processing. The individual production steps intertwine. It is not the case that I first draft and then implement it obstinately. I also try to avoid to study jewellery of other artists. Unconsciously you always get influenced. One should be genuine and develop his/her own style.” Andreas Eberharter has found it. His jewellery possesses an idiosyncratic congeniality. And so do those who wear it. They are self-confident, strong personalities who appreciate individuality and who are down to earth.

My artistic bent is toward sculptural forms and I love beading. I find Andreas jewelry very interesting in concept, … but the size leaves me a bit put off. All the jewelry I design I think of as needing to be wearable and if I would not ever ever wear it myself I rethink my design. I have some beaded collars that are pretty over the top and frankly think of them more as frameable artwork that I could hang on the wall much as a painting rather than practical wearables. But then that’s me, mindstretching to see someone doing work this radical.

I always find it really challenging to see items that are this out-of-the-box. Makes me rethink all my assumptions :-)
