Getting Started with Making Wire Jewelry

Most jewelry hobbyist start with bead stringing as a way to enter the world of hand-crafted jewelry. For the most part, along with good old macramé, that is how I started getting serious about making jewelry myself. However, eventually, I started wondering about other types of jewelry making. I wanted to expand and learn new techniques. After bead stringing, the next most logical step is that of making wire jewelry. Wire is a super versatile medium, used in both stringing, on its own, and with other methods such as metal fabrication and even fused glass. If you’ve been considering expanding your jewelry horizons and haven’t tried wire, then you’re missing out. It takes a few more tools than bead stringing, but the possibilities will add tremendously to your jewelry repertoire. In my article “Getting Started: Wire Working,” I cover all the basics about the tools and miscellaneous items you’’ll need to get started with wire.

I started beading by making a tiny beaded gecko, then went on to woven rings, then peyote, then loom work, then bead crochet, and bead knitting, then decided to have a go at making wire rings. The first one was brilliant, but every one since has been horrible………the last thing I made was bead strung……… so I have learnt it all backwards!

LOL!! I think a lot of people do it that way, Mary…we’re all over the board and bouncing around to whatever catches our eye next :-)
