I am interested in the stuff that flows in and out of our hands – in my case, it can be a scrap of fur, or fragments of metal that I encounter on my bench. These things are often imbued with unexplored meaning and emotion. I am drawn to relationships, and in making my jewelry, I get to explore the relationships that we have with these materials, the people and places they come from and how they can be understood through the medium of jewelry.
Gayle Friedman lives and works in Washington, DC. She studied metalsmithing with Anya Pinchuk at the Corcoran School of Art and Design.Friedman is the founder of Studio 4903, a studio space for working artists, that also serves after hours as a 21st Century Salon by hosting artistic andcultural events. The “unexplored meaning” of fur is pain and death. You might want to look for some recyclable that hurts the “donor” less.
I knew someone would bring this up when I chose to post Gayle’s work, and I’m sure you speak for many. Since she works with reclaimed fur, I can’t agree that her work is what hurt the donor. But I can appreciate your feelings on it Priscilla, and have to say that while I personally wouldn’t be interested in wearing it, I can still appreciate Gayle’s skill and artistry
