Call for entries: MJSA Vision Award

The Manufacturing Jewelers & Suppliers of America is now accepting entries for its 19th annual Vision Awards design competition. Each year, the competition recognizes the talent and innovation of designers whose work will have a profound influence on the future of jewelry design. Categories for this year include:

Design Excellence, for designs that exhibit exceptional creativity, craftsmanship, and marketability.

Visionary Technical Solution, for designs in which specific technical challenges-such as combining two non-complementary metals-were overcome to take the piece from concept to completion.

Laser Distinction, for entries in which the design relied upon the use of a laser (sponsored by LaserStar Technologies).

Gold Distinction, for entries that include a minimum of 75 percent of a karat gold alloy in the design (sponsored by Hoover and Strong).

In addition, students in any jewelry-related program may submit rendered designs for the Future of the Industry Award, which recognizes exceptional design achievement and potential.

Award winners will receive up to $1,000 and will be honored on March 16, 2009, at the annual MJSA Expo New York show. In addition, winners will receive recognition in MJSA Journal, as well as other trade publications, and on MJSA Online.

Call for entries: Saul Bell Design Award

This is the 10th year for the prestigious Saul Bell Design Award competition! Entries for the 2010 competition are due (renderings or photographs) by September 18, 2009. On November 9, 2009, the 30 finalists will be notified.

Here are the categories for this year:
Gold/Platinum
The predominant metal is gold, platinum or a combination of both. May be cast, fabricated, forged, assembled, or any combination of techniques. Must be your original design.

Precious Metal Clay®
The predominant material is either silver or gold Precious Metal Clay® (PMC), PMC+® or PMC3®. Must be your original design.

Beads
The predominant design elements are beads, pearls, or other strung ornaments. Beads may be any material. Must be your original design or assembly.

Silver
The predominant metal is silver. May be cast, fabricated, forged, assembled or any combination of techniques. Must be your original design.

Hollowware
A vessel that is spun, drawn, forged and/or raised. May incorporate decorative cast or fabricated components into the design. The medium is predominantly silver and/or gold.

Enamel
The predominant surface material must be enamel. Use glass-based enamels and fire on any type of metal. Must be your original design and construction.

Call for entries:Flower-inspired challenge

The forum at Beading Daily has come up with a first-ever forum challenge for beaders: You are hereby challenged to create something out of beads or create beads themselves that are inspired by flowers. Some participants plan to actually create a flower out of seed beads, but the intent isn’t to limit you to any particular medium or technique.

The deadline is July 18, 2009, so hurry!
