String on 4 beads in your "core" color. Add 3 beads in a "spiral" color. Take the needle back up through only the 4 core beads and pull snug. Add 1 core bead and 3 spiral beads. Take the needle up through the last 3 core beads and through the 1 that you just added. Pull snug. Repeat, always letting the beads that you add fall to the same side of the core.
