Two Interweave magazines to merge

If you are a subscriber to Step By Step Beads, you will already be aware that after the Jan/Feb 2010 issue, you will be receiving Beadwork Magazine instead.  If you are used to picking it up on the newsstand, you might not already know.   Last week, Interweave Press announced that the two magazines would merge, keeping the Beadwork name.  Step By Step Beads was acquired in 2006 when Interweave took over Lapidary Journal from the Primedia family of magazines.

The immediate past editor of Step by Step Beads magazine, Leslie Rogalski, has recently assumed the role of Online Editor for Beading Daily.  The current Step by Step Beads editor, Jane Dickerson, will remain with Interweave in another editorial capacity, and Melinda Barta will continue as editor of Beadwork.

Beadwork magazine has been serving the beading world for more than a decade and delivers the content that our experienced, passionate beaders want: techniques, inspiration, and great projects. Beadwork will be introducing the following new features starting with the April/May 2010 issue:

Project ratings: A graphic that rates a project’s required time commitment level on a 1-to-3 scale.

Stitch Pro: A starting place for beginners that teaches a common stitch, while offering beaders of all levels an in-depth exploration of the stitch.

Simply Seeds: A spotlighted project 100% made with seed beads, from clasp to the body of the project.

Bead Artist: Expanded to include profiles of both bead artisans and beadweaving artists.

So, two Interweave magazines will interweave? If they alternate pages, they can be interleaved too. :)

Does this mean anything for Step by Step Wire Jewelry? I find that most beading magazine contain wire/chain projects, but nowhere near the extent that pleases my niche market.

LOL!! Nothing has been said about Step by Step Wire. I think the problem was that the other SBS and Beadwork were just too close in content. SBSW has a whole different base, so I’m going to guess there aren’t any plans at the moment to change it.

Believe it or not, I no longer subscribe to or read any beading magazines! Guess I’m too busy beading!

  3. Heidi says:

I am glad that I did not get a subscription now. I will have to wait and see what this new Beadwork magazine is all about, as I really didn’t care for it to begin with. I thought SBS Beads was the best beading mag. on the market. I am not one for lots of projects using little seed beads as they simply don’t appeal to me. This may be a huge win for most though. And I can certainly see combining it. I would have preferred them combining it with SBS Wire. Too bad for me.

I don’t think this move is going to make you very happy then, Heidi. I’m not seeing any indication that Beadwork is going to shift its focus off of seed beads at all. You can read the full press release here:

Again another mag that I enjoy bites the dust! SBS is one of my favorites, my mate and I were planning on subscribing when his other bead mag subscription ends next month. Beadwork doesn’t thrill me. The patterns are way to complex and seem more of an art form instead of sellable jewelry.
