Who Is a Jewelry Artist?

I came across this quote by Paul Goodman, a 1960s social critic and author of Growing Up Absurd, which this quote comes from:
The idea of jewelry as an art form is a constant form of debate at the About.com Jewelry Making forum and other on and off line communities. However, I think just about any art medium comes across this puzzle. I subscribe to a number of different art and craft related lists, and on one recently, a list not at all related to jewelry, this issue came up about who can be called and artist and who is merely an amateur, a want-to-be artist who buys her supplies at Michaels craft store (heaven forbid!).
But, didnt all artists start out as creative amateurs? Im sure Im not capturing the entire spirit of Goodmans quote here, but it made me stop and think about this kind of elitist philosophy. Id like to come up with my own kind of quote, something a little more democratic, like, maybe:
And you can quote me on that!

I like Vincent Van Gogh’s quote much better than Paul Goodman’s:
"If you hear a voice within you saying, ‘You are not a painter,’ then by all means, paint…and that voice will be silenced. "
We need all the affirmation we can get! Good article, Tammy
I love that, Cyndi and I’m totally stealing it for my next blog entry. Thanks you!
