Keeping the Castle

Basement Shelves Up on Memorial Weekend

basement floor planToday is a holiday in the U.S., set aside to remember those who have died in the country’s service. A lot of people have also taken advantage of the long weekend (and the warm weather) to start or catch up on jobs around the house. My family was no exception.

A few years ago, my home’s basement was finished to include a craft/computer room. I took photos then of the walls after the studs and electrical work have been installed. Just in case. Little did I know it then but these photos have proven to be very helpful. This past weekend, it was decided that the craft room needed some extra storage space. We used ClosetMaid’s ShelfTrack system. It was really easy to install!

The photos came in handy in locating the studs where the supports for the shelves were supposed to go. It was as if we could see right through the walls! Although studs were spaced at the regulation 16″ inches apart, the wall we were working with was a little irregular. It had a sliding door which made finding the studs a little tricky. With the photos, we knew exactly what we were up against.

If you’re finishing your basement or garage, or even building your home, take the time to photograph the walls just before the drywall goes up. Pay special attention to places with pipes, electrical outlets and irregular spaces. It only takes a minute and you may find these photos worth your while someday!
