I drove through the state university today and noticed that more and more students are coming back for the fall term. With the college cook in mind, here’s my list of basic tools for a working kitchen:

1. chef knife
2. chopping board
3. kitchen shears
4. can opener
5. pizza cutter
6. set of measuring spoons
7. set of measuring cups for solids
8. measuring cup for liquids
9. frying pan
10. 4-quart saucepan
11. set of ladles and spoons
12. potholder

This is only sort of for the kitchen, but I have to say, the kitchen tool I used most last semester in college as a freshman was a lightweight metal mixing bowl. Not only is this good for making cookies or something, but its infinitely useful in the dorm where you either do not have a sink in your room, or only have a very small sink with no stopper. I used it to clean out the fridge, clean mud off boots after a very muddy renaissance trip with friends, to water plants, to soak dishes in, all the little things that you might need a bucket or bowl full of water for, your mixing bowl will do for you.
