Cookbooks for Kids

For Christmas, I got The Chronicles of Narnia and Cooking Rocks! Rachael Ray’s 30-Minute Meals for Kids. I’m almost done reading the first one, and the second should see service in a couple of years. My eldest is almost three and, when I bake, is right there at the kitchen counter with me. Since I’m such a fan of Rachael Ray’s style of cooking, her cookbook for kids could be just the right help when the time comes for my kids to learn how to cook.
It’s a great idea to start children early on a skill that will serve them well their entire lives. There are quite a number of cookbooks designed just for them. Some of them are:
* Emeril’s There’s a Chef in My Soup! Recipes for the Kid in Everyone. Includes 75 recipes by the New Orleans chef. A Caution bar at the top the page lets young cooks know how careful they need to be. For ages 9 to 12.
* The Kid’s Cookbook: A Great Book for Kids Who Love to Cook! from Williams-Sonoma. More than 40 easy recipes for ages 9 and up.
* Children’s cookbooks based on favorite children’s books – various cookbooks based on classic children’s books. An example is the Green Eggs and Ham Cookbook.

I think you are absolutely right about teaching children to cook early – and I don’t think three is too soon. My eldest amazed me the other week by insisting on cooking the main meal for us – she’s 11. Start now with the easy jobs (no sharp knives!) and you may get a meal out of it in a few years. A lot of mess in the meantime, though.
I’ve jolted your blog here.
Hi Lucy,
Thanks for the jolt! And the tip! I’m looking forward to the time my kids can cook an entire meal in the kitchen.
My two girls love cooking – they are nearly 4 and 13. I signed them up to an “at home” cooking course – they get their recipes & utensils posted to them every month and just love it.
For anyone in the UK, check out their website (they’ve got some great cooking kits for presents too!)

That’s a great idea, Dani! With kids so ‘wired’ these days, a cooking course that they can get online may be just the right thing to get them started. Thanks for the website.
