Decorating a Basement with a Sharpie

Decorating a room doesn’t have to cost much. With talent and imagination, Charlie Kratzer turned his basement from blah to bam! using $10 worth of black Sharpie markers.
Charlie drew both historical figures and fictional characters on the walls of his basement. He featured his dad, R2D2, Winston Churchill, Joan Crawford, Sherlock Holmes, and others. Here’s a screenshot of a corner of the basement:
Although the entire basement is covered with the drawings, it doesn’t look crowded or overwhelming, due to the simple lines of black over a cream background. There isn’t a spot of color on the walls, which makes the mural even more striking.
If you can draw, you can try this technique out yourself. Start small like in a bathroom or a closet. It can add a bit of whimsy to an otherwise boring wall.

Now that’s really cool. I wish we could do our bedroom walls with something like that.
I’m surprised he was able to make it all run together so well (from scene to scene - from wall to wall)! And to be daring enough to do that — kudos to him! ((Think he’s available to come over to decorate our home office? ‘Cause I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to pull it off so magnificently — far from it.))
That is way cool. Of course, one has to be able to draw something besides stick figures. . .
Catherine and Kristen, it is pretty nice, isn’t it? I’m not sure how long he did the entire basement. But, from the article, it seems it started with just one part of one wall.
Heather, well, maybe if you can draw stick figures very well, it just might work.
Don’t let my 4-year-old son see that! I have been insisting that it is bad behavior to draw on the wall with markers! Looks very cool though.
That is too cool!
Very nice!
Lindley, I didn’t show it to my kids either. We have enough marks on our walls as it is, and it’s not what I would call decorative.
My daughter would love to try to do this to her room. My husband would die.
cool- I would be tempted to do paint by numbers
